NEW BRIGHTON NOTES.

Tides. It will be high tide on the beach this morning at 10.47 a.m., and in the river at 12.14 p.m., and to-morrow at 11.0 l a.m. and 1.2 p.m. respectively. The Churches. The services at the Methodist Church to-morrow will be conducted at 11 a.m. by Mr Pugh, and at 6.30 pan. by the Ecv. F. T. Read (Communion); soloist, Mrs Bonnington. South Brighton Hall, 3 p.m., Rev. P. T. Read. Harvest thanksgiving services will be held at the Presbyterian Church tomorrow. The preachers will be the Rev. J. S. Young and the Rev. J. D. Webster. Solos will be sung by Miss Langley and Mr Bills, and a quartet by Mr aud Mrs West, Miss Eaglesome, and Mr Bills. The gifts of produce sent in will be sold, along with work done by the Ladies' Association, the following Saturday afternoon and evening. The hour of evening services has been altered to 6.30 for the winter months. The Sunday School classes, including North Beach, resume to-morrow.

At the Beach Church the services tomorrow will be as follows: Holy Communion at 8 a.m. Matins and Holy Communion at 11 a.m., and Evensong at 7 p.m. The vicar, the Rev. C. W. I. Maclaverty, will conduct the foregoing. There will also be an evening service at the North Beach schoolroom, in charge of Mr F. J. L. Scott, in the absence of the Rev. W. F. Knowles. The Sunday School will reopen at 2.30 p.m. on Sunday. Presbyterian Church Social. A social evening tendered to Mr and Mrs Arthur Bruce, who recently, removed from the district, and also to Mr William Moore, who lately returned from a trip Home, was held recently. A presentation of an oil painting, the work of Mr Jones, of South Brighton, was made to Mr Arthur Bruce) in recognition of his ten years' service as treasurer. . The appreciation of the congregation was voiced by the Rev. J. S. Young and Mr West, the session clerk. Musical items were rendered by the Misses Gibb, Langley, Lightbody, Ailsa WesffMr and Mrs West, and Mr Pearce, while elocutionary items were contributed by Mr Bert Goodland. Whist Club. The fortnightly drive of the Happy Hours Whist Club was as successful as its forerunners, a very jolly evening being spent. The prize-winners were Mrs de Roo and Mrs Ransom, consolation prizes going to Mrs Hay and Mrs Weir. Ladies' Miniature Rifle Club. At the weekly practice match, the following registered the best scores:— Miss R. McClelland, 33, 30; Mesdamos Ball, 32, 32; Stokes, 32, 32; Buschl, 32, 31; Burmeistcr, 31, 30; McClelland 331. Miss McClelland was awarded a point for the senior gold pendant. Miss I. Tillyshort, a promising junior shot, put on 29. The competition for the Tisdall button and junior pendant commences next week. W.C.T.U. The New Brighton members of the Young People's Temperance Union met at the-residence of Mrs Gibb, Lonsdale street, for their monthly meeting, the president Mrs F. M. Mitchell, being in the chair. The delegates' report of the annual convention of the W.C.T.U. was received. Several items were given during the evening, those contributing being Mrs F. M. Mitchell, the Misses Lightbody, T. Buxton, G. and A. Gibb, and B. Nelson. At the conclusion, a hearty vote of thanks was accorded the; hostess. New Brighton Cricket Club. The second annual smoke concert of the local cricket club is being held in the Pier Ilall this ovening. Gala Committee. The Gala Committee met in the Council Chambers on Thursday, the Mayor (Mr J. Gamble) presiding over a good attendance. It being reported that all the arrangements iu connexion with the annual function were well in hand, it was decided to hold the gala on Saturday next, and to ask all members of the General Committee and those who would help to meet on Thursday evening. It was also agreed, should sufficient support be offering and the weather conditions favourable, to hold the Domain fete on Wednesday, Juno 3rd. Ladies' Hockey Club. The local ladies' hockey club held a hard-up social on Thursday evening, Mr J. H. Shaw presiding. The prizes were awarded as follows:—Best hard-u£ dress, Miss Herrick 1, Miss Walls 2. . In the guessing competition, prizes were won by Miss Foote and Miss Innes, while Mrs Tooley was presented with the booby prize. This afternoon the club's senior team plays Digby's at Hagley Park. Football. This afternoon the junior football team will play West Christchurch Old Boys, at New Brighton. The following local players have been selected: J. Bettridge, J. Speedy, H. Stokes, N. Ball, J. McPherson, H. Bellamy, R. P. Hopkins, H. Bellamy, W. Gray, J. Stokes, J. Dooley, W. Muirson. E. A. Owles C. Pickett, J. Taylor, J. Shore. Other matches are: Third Grade v. Albion, on No. 4 Polo Ground; Sixth Grade v. Technical, at Lancaster Park; Fifth Grade v. Technical, at North Park.
