ACCIDENTALLY SHOT.

PALMERSTON NORTH, April .27,
An inquest was held to-day regarding the death of Thomas Hedley, a telegraph linesman at EangiwaKia, who died in the hospital on April 20th, following admission for treatment for a bullet wound in the lung received on Good Friday, while shooting with others at Eangiwahia. John McLean, blacksmith, Bangiwahia, state'd that on April 10th he had been rabbit shooting with Hedley and one other. Witness had a Winchester repeating rifle. After shooting over the countrv he shot at a target. Witness proceeded,to unload the rifle. When he thought it empty, ho closed the breech, but it went off unexpectedly. Hedley apparently walked .over in frout of the muzzle. Witness must have pulled the trigger thinking that the rifle was unloaded. After the rifle had exploded, Hedley said, "I'm hit." Soon after he was carried to an hotel on a litter of branches and medically attended. ' . • James McKcc, postmaster, Jiangi' waliia, gave corrobotivo evidence. « The Coroner's verdict was that deceased died of septicemia resulting from a bullet wound accidentally inflicted by John McLean, near Eangiwahia.
