SECURITY PACT.
INCLUSION OF GERMANY. "MERELY AN EXPEDIENT." (cr cable association'— cornuGUT.) IKECTEE'S TEUMBAHSO PAWS, March £6. The newspapers welcome the cordiality of Mr Austen Chamberlain's speech in the llouse of. Commons, but regret that Great Britain opposes the Anglo-Franco-Belgian Pact, for wliich the suggested substitute of a pact including Germany is deemed inadequate. The papers admit the expediency of following up the proposals, but insist lirst of all on Germany's entry into the League as a token of good faith, also a preliminary settlement of the disarmament
question. "he- Temps" utters a warning against slipping into a revision of the Treaty of Versailles. '"Libcrtc" declares that tho German pact idea is merely a Parliamentary expedient. "A SCRAP OF PAPER." GERMAN PRESS COMMENT. (AUSTRALIAN AM) X.Z. CA3LI ASSOCIATIOS.) BERLIN, March 26. It is authoritatively stated that there is no truth in the report that Gcrmany is prepared to enter the League of Nations unconditionally. On the contrary, tho Government maintains its original attitude on the question of war guilt. Hitherto, only a. few Nationalist papers have commented on Mr Austen Chamberlain's speech, none favourably. The "Bocrsen Zcitung" attacks Dr. Strescmann 's security-pact proposals, declaring that any treaty made will remain a scrap of paper to the Opposition. The "Deutsche, Zeitung" is of tho opinion that Dr. Strcaemann's failure makes hia resignation essential.'
