PREPARATIONS AT
ADDINGTON.
IMPROVEMENTS IN HAND. In preparation for the second Royal Show, which is to bo held next November on the Canterbury A. and P. Association's Show Grounds, important improvements aro under way at Addington and will bo completed, it is fully anticipated, in time for the important fixture. Theso improvements, which include the cattle pavilion and a building which will provide sleoping accommodation for men m charge of stock and other exhibits, and on the ground floor for a bar to replace tho present one, invola-e an expenditure of close upon £'lo.ooo. The contractor for the two buildings, Mr J. W. Francis, has a considerable amount of material on the ground for tho cattle pavilion and intends making a start almost immediately with the erection of the building. The pavilion, which is to be built of reinforced concrete, will he orected along tho boundary between the Show Grounds and the trotting grounds and •will extend for oCOft from a point about olio chain from the new entrance to the Show grounds from Westenra street along tho boundary towards tho railwav. The width of tho building will be 114 ft. The roof will be of saw-tooth iron principle construction, with southern lights; the pavilion will bo lighted principally from tho roof. There will bo four alleyways running the long way of the building, each 16ft wide, and two bisecting alleyways each 10ft. wide. The pavilion will accommodate <WSf cattle, 24 fat cattle, and 42 bulls—a total of 414. There aro also 24 feed boxes provided. The ordinary cattlo •pens and those for tho bulls are each ■Oft by oft; those for tho fat cattle are, in some instances, 10ft by Bft, and in others Bft by 6ft. Each of the cattle pens is provided with a feoding trough. The estimated cost of the building is slightly over £6OOO. The building to provide sleeping accommodation for attendants on stock and other exhibits and for the new bar will be 109 ft long by 30ft vide and will bo also, of reinforced concrete. It is to be erected' at the rear of the grand stand; a passage way loft wide is to separate the stand from the new building. The sleeping accommodation is to be provided on the first floor and takes the form of cubicles, nineteen containing two bunks, 15 four bunks, and one three hunks—a total of 101. On the same floor there will be lavatory and bath accommodation. Tho ground floor will he occupied bv the new bar, which will ho double-sided, 103 ft in length by I3ft wide. A tea, room for tho bar attendants, a storeroom, and lavatory accommodation are aleo provided. The contract price for this building is ■£2653, and Mr Francis is the contractor for its erection. The architects for both buildings were Messrs England Brothers.
