EVOLUTION AND DR. LOTSY.
TO THE EDITOR OF "THB F*ES9." Sir. —Those of us who liave heard Dr. Lotsy lecture, with some of a foreigner's limitations, or read a brief report of his views ill the public Press, can only reserve criticism till the printed pamphlet promised appears. Meantime let me say that if there has been an attempt on the part of any, conscious of the weaknesses of pass theories of evolution, to turn the discussion, by means of a distinguished botanist, into a new and less assailable channel, the effort has signally failed. Dr. Lotsy's free condemnation of all previous theories and the tentative putting forth of his own views stive to remind us of what w© are apt to forget: that evolution has never been more than thedTy, which 6ome scientists think useful, some in other fields lake for granted without investigation and the majority refuse to accept, or even tolerate, except as a harmless working hypothesis. Tho. many who are on the., side of thei latter inay be excused if tltey silently look on tiinused to have another illustration as to how the Kilkenny cats killed one another. — Youre, et6., JOHN DICKSON. Christchurch, March 27th.
