LEAGUE OF NATIONS' UNION.

A ■ meeting ofthe,-: Council of ■ the Christclrurch Branch of the- L.N.TL was held in- 1 the Y.M.C.A. on Tuesday, the . president, Professor Condlifie,. presiding. A letter was ' received! from Archbishop Julius, who had been asked .'to "accept the office of patron, stating that hia engagements would render it impossible for him t<> give more than sympathy to the Union's work, and suggesting that it might Tie better to appoint a patron who conld do more than this". It was unanimously decided that the honour conferred on the '.-Union by the iichtyishop's patronage more than outweighed his objections, and that His gracious offer to accept office under, these conditions . be accepted. The question of a Dominion conference of L.MVDV branches to be held in Wellington in May was reopened. After lengthy discussion it was decided, on the .motion of Miss I/aw, to rescind a motion passed at the last Council meeting deciding not to send a delegation to the conference. It was felt that so long as the ChristchuTch Branch stood! out the possibility •of building up a national organisation of the L.N.U. would )>"> endangered, if not" destroyed; and that the movement could not well progress without such a national basis. A further motion decided to send a delegation, the president, Professor CondliSe, the secretary, Mr W. T. G. Airey, and 'Mrs T. E. Taylor being asked to represent • the Christchurch Branch, together with any other members of the Council who might be'in Wellington at the "time of the conference. With regard to the proposed appointment of a Dominion organiser, it was decided to instruct the delegation that before any appointment be made the terms ,of appointment should be submitted to the local branches for ratification. '.. On the motion of. Mr C. R. X. Mackie it was re3olred that general meetings °i Branch, open to all members and"' tbe'.v ■friends, be held monthly. At the next meeting Professor Condlifie will speak on the International Labour Organisation. The president, secretary, , Miss Law, and Mr Mackie were appointed a sub-committce to draw up a syllabus'for the year.
