SELWYN BRIDGE.
LIBERAL GOVERNMENT SUBSIDY.
LOOKING TO THE COUNTIES. It is to bo hoped that, now the Highways Board has promised to provide a subsidy nf £3 to £'l for the erection of a bridge over the ifelwyn, the local bodies concerned will rise to the occasion and find the necessary amount for the purpose. At the present time it is necessary for motorists, ii the ford is impassable, to make a detour of from seven to eight miles to get, to tho Ellcsmcre bridge. An elaborate bridge over the Selwyn is not necessary. All that is required is a structure that will take a single car at a time with a. space in the centre to enable two cars to pass each other when they meet on the bridge, i
It is tin- intention of' Mr J. S. Hawkes. secretary of the Canterbury Automobile Association, to confer with the four local authorities concerned, and it is t-o be trusted that the result, of the conference will be a successful one.
