OTIRA NOTES.

(SPSCIAI. TO "thx paiss.")

OTIEA, February 14,

The headmaster of Lyttelton District High School, Mr Walker, and his wife, are spending a few weeks' holiday in Otira. '

Mr W. Frazer, of the Loco Department, and<aome friends, climged to the higuest point of Mount Rolleston last Sunday. He speaks highly ■of tho scenery. The weather was perfect until yesterday, when rain set in. To-day it looked like clearing. The motor road from Arthur's Pass to Otira is fairly good just now, and many do this trip by car. The roads from Otira to Greymouth and Hokitika are also fairly good. • A cricket match was played this week end between A. and B. teams of the Railway Service, with a win for B. team. „

Mr Brown, transferred from Canterbury to Otira, has now taken up residence here. A slight epidemic of colic amongst children is, it is believed, caused through the eating of sprayed fruit. Mr J. Phibbs leaves on transfer to Ross. He will be greatly missed, as he has; always taken a prominent part in the social life of Otira.

Mr R. Irvine has arrived on transfer from Ross.

The material for the new tennis court is now oh the ground, and the court is expected to be finished in the near future.

Mr F. Allett has been appointed conductor of the local orchestra in place of Mr J. Phibbs, resigned.

Last year the hills at" Otira were coveredwith the beautiful irata bloom, but this year the flower i s very scarce.
