NEW AGREEMENT BEING NEGOTIATED. (special to "tot: mess.") GREYMOUTH, February [>. llio negotiations for a new agreement at tho State Mines which took place to-day at Dunollie, resulted in a deadlock. Mr A. H. Ivimbell, UnderSecretary for Alines, and Mr I. A. James, Superintendent of the State Collieries, represented the Department, and tho men's delegates were Messrs J. F. Pattinson, 11. English, R. Southward, J. McAlvey, J. Knight and Smith. Mr Kimbcll stated to "The Press" representative that the demands made were impossible of satisfaction. Fresh proposals are likely. A lengthy discussion toot place on the proposed working of an additional section on a co-operative basis, and many requests for grants and assistance in district matters were made. The tunnel from the middle brake section upon the driving of which men have been engaged for tho past five years is now nearing completion, and the coal should bo tapped in March., giving the Liverpool colliery a new life. It is hoped to work tho section which will be opened up on tho co-operative plan. The president of the Union, Mr J. F. Pattinson,- who is also Mayor of llunanga, has expressed himself as favourable to its adoption on a sectional basis. Mr C. N. Taylor, of the Brunnerton Collieries Ltd.. stated to-night that it is very possible that when the Wallsend colliery re-opens, the -workmen will bo employed on this basis. Mr J. Bishop, of Auckland, the company's consulting engineer, conferred to-day with Messrs B. R. Sword, District Traffic Manager, and P. H.- Morey, District Engineer, regarding the proposed deviation of the railway line at Wallsend. This will bo for the purpose of providing better facilities for the transport of coal from the Wallsend pit, and part of the company's freehold will be utilised. In view of the fact that the line will be straightened by the devition, the work should meet with" the approval of the Department. Mr, Bishop inspected the mine and made a rough draft of the layout.
