CHILDREN'S SWIMMING. CAPITATION GRANT. The City Council last night received a letter from 'the ' Wunedin City Council enclosing copy a letter which had been forwardsd to tho Minister of Education on the eubject of tho restoration of the capitation grant to the .Education Board ;or ficjool children's a dimming classes, and asking the Council to co-operate in urging the Minister to restore the capitation fee to Education Boards. A note, supplied by the Town Cleric, stated that at Christchurch school children were admitted to tho Tepid saths m squ*da of 26 in charge of a teacher, for which fees ranging from 128 6d to 37a Gd per squad were charged; the practice being for the teacher to collect a proportion of the fee from each child Then tho squad wm formed, and the feo was paid to tho baths custodian in advance. .No payment was made by the Education Bawd lor school 6Wimming classes. At the Olago swimming championships Bailey retained hi# title in the 220 yards race, winning easily in 2mic stscc. McLean, aged sixteen, won the half-mile in l2rain 54sec, one second below the Jfew Zealand standard.
