GOLF.

NOTES OF THE DAY.

(Dy ''Jigger.")

LOCAL CLUB FIXTURE. Shirley.—Sahirday, January 3rd—Four-beil Best-Ball Bogey (continued from the Christina!! Tin rna.ment); .Saturday, January 10th—Play-off of Bogey Handicap tie from tho Anniversary Day events. In connexion with the Christmas tournament at Shirley today, a match has been arranged for the two Wellington professionals who are in Christchurch this week. J. Mcintosh, of Lower Hutt, and A. J. Shaw, of Wellington and J. A. Clements, of the Hagley Club, and H.. R. Blair, of Shirley. They will play a stroke competition over IS hole? this afternoon, starting as soon after lunch as convenient. Christchurch golfers desiring to follow the play will be welcome. Tire Christinas tournament of the Christchurch Golf Club at Shirley began on. Friday, as schedule, although the rain was so bad that the afternoon event, the Four-ball Best Ball Bogey Handicap, had to be postponed, and it will be played at Shirley on Saturday afternoon nest. The Bogey Handicap on Friday morning was played in heavy rain, and most, of the cards were very bad, but J. Millard, the club champion of, the Avondale Club, found the going to his liking, and returned a score of 76, which made him 2 up on bogey and an easy winner. The weather was fine on Saturday, the second day, and a big field started in the championship event of 3fi holes. At noon it was evident that E. M. Macfarlane was going to make a runaway race of it, which he did. Turning in a 73 in the morning, with the nearest scoro six strokes worse, ho went round in the afternoon in 76, making 149 for the 3G holes, while the runnerup, C. W. Hodsdon, was ten strokes away with 159. T. H. A. Richards wou the Medal Handicap played concurrently with the first round, with a 72 net, and W. B. Purchas won in the afternoon with the same score. In the meantime the ladies playing in the Christmas Handicap wero having a slow time of it, on account of the large entry of men occupying the course almost to tho exclusion of the ladies, but they had a clear run when they finally got away. Mrs J. H. Early and Miss H..M. Sapsford tied with net scores of 112 and had to play off, when Miss Sapsford returned a 55 net to Mrs Early's 61. Detailed results of the various events will be found in another column. The tournament will be concluded to-day. The Christmas tournament at Shirley proved highly successful as far as the number of entries was concerned, and I am advised that the New Year's tournaments at Miramar, Wellington, and Balmacewan, Dunedin, also have had record entries. This fact goes to prove that summer golf is popular and should be encouraged and catered for by the local clubs more than it is. Every club in Christchurch should be playing a regular summer programme. The heavy rains of the several days prior to Saturday, together with the fact that it "rained until daylight on Saturday, and tho greenkeeper was unable for this reason to get the greens cut, interfered with the scoring.in the Christchurch /Amateur Championship event, and therefore the scores made are not a guide as to what may be expected in the New Zealand Championship Meeting to be held here next October. E. M. Macfarlane got a 73 and 76,. but apart from him the scoring was erratic and his second round was affected by the conditions, as he took 42 to go out. Rana Wagg, of the Lower Hutt Club, got a 74 in the afternoon round, and there was another Tound of 76, by R. A. -Wilson, late Invercargill champion. A couple of 78's and three 79 'b made up the scores below 80. Under favourable conditions the same players.and players of the Bame class would do much better. Possibly the scores of the four professionals, who are playing a stroke competition to-day. will furnish a better indication of what scores may be expected in October. CHRISTMAS TOURNAMENT. The Christmas tournament at Shirley links wae continued on Saturday in fine weather, and a big field participated in the play*. Despite the heavy rain of the pervious day the course wae dry and in first-class condition, and tho caretaker, Cormnci, and his staff are to be congratulated on the work they did in the short apace of time after the rain ceased and the play began. The big field began leaving the first tee at 9 a.m. sharp, and the last couple did not get away until 1-3 o'clock, although H. R. Blair, the Shirley professional, acting as starter, had tho pairs leaving' at two minute intervals. Amateur Open Championship. The Christchurch amateur open championship, which consisted of two rounds of 18 holes each, stroke play, was the chief item of interest among the men, and at noon the sixteen best scores were:

At tho close of the second round in ths afternoon E. M.' Macjarlano was the winner, returning a 76, which gave him a. total of 349, ana C. "W. Hodsdon, who got a 73 in the afternoon, was runner-up with. 159. The winner, E. M. Macfarlane, is a player of rare ability, and is by far the soundest golfer in Christchurch. He is now th« holder of the Canterbury amateur championship and the Christchurch amateur championship. He held tho Christchurch Golf Club championship for the last two years, but is not the present holder, being put out in tho semi-final of the club contest in October, by A. L. Cropp, tho present club champion. The best aggregate scores in the champion
