LYTTELTON REGATTA.

♦ KEEN CONTESTS "TCk-n. after having postponed the regatta from the previous day, the committee found Saturday morcins break with heavy ram ihoivrrs! they were naturally undecided whether to maio a further postponement. However, there were those on the committee who no doubt saw the silver lining to the cloud?, for it -was fma!!r decided to carpon. Their optimism was justified by the fine, and at times hot, weather that lolloped. One part of the programme was missing, however, and that was the swimming carnival, which was to have been conducted bv the Corsair Bav Swimming Club in tho dock. The omission of tho aranminff races cannot bo regarded as anything but a breach of faith on the part of the club, and many people were disappointed. The weather was line and warm, and tho tcmpcigjjjro of the water could not have been mucli affected bv the preceding two day* of warm rain. Those who attended the rcgaUa—and qmto a- big crowd came through frcm tho city in tho carlv afletnoon trains, had tho pleasure of eceing an enjoyable- programme of rowing evcnt3 and some really fine yacht and motor-boat races. Mr J. D. Bundy's motorcruiser O'Marama was the official flagship. The following were the officials:—Patron, Mr W. T. L'ester (Mayor of Lyttelton); commodore, Mr Cvrtis J. K. Williams. Bowing: Judges, Messrs F. D. Kcstcveu, H. Bern", ('. M. Boswcll, and B. Nightingale; starter, Mr G. Thomas; steward, Mr H. W. Kyder; umpire, Mr W. G. Godfrey; Bowing Association's representative, Mr E. Hobbe. Sailing and motor boat: Judge, Mr W. Toomey; handicn.o-pers, Capt. H. Dilner, Mcsstb J. Waddelf, F. Morrison, M. Smith: starter and timekeeper. Mr W. Toomey; sailing committee, <'apt. H. Dilner, Messrs J. W-addell, M. Smith; rowing course committer, Messrs g! I). White-Parsons, J. Yoycc, J. Scott, B. J.' Coskin; "ion. secretary and trcaeurer, Mr A. V. Clarke. SANDERS CUP RACE. The seventh and final trial race of the Sanders Memorial Cup tests was tho first item on tho programme. Tho course was a triangular one, starting irom tno corner of Gladstone Pior, nround a pile near the Beef Light, lhen.ee around a buoy oft Quarry Point, and back to the starting point, twice around. The crews were:— Linnet—B. Sinclair, C. Williams, W. Morton, D. Scott. Secret—S. Toomey, B. Collins, T. Harkess, J. Jeffreys. Pioioi-J. Sinclair, P. Sinclair, P. Dobby, B. Pascoe. The race started at 11.30, in a light breeze and heavy easterly swell. Pioioi was first across, followed by Linnet and Secret together. Linnet was first out with her spinnaker and overhauled Pioioi. Tho times at the Beef Light were: Linnet .. •.« i.« 11.40.40 Pioioi >, i.< —■ U-40.47 Secret .. .. .. 11.40.52 Tho boats' then mado a long board, close hauled on tho port tack, for Church Bay, a strong flood tido retarding thorn. Halfway across Linnet was well to windward. She essayed a, starboard tack, but, finding she was losing ground, was quickly back upon the other tack. Nearing the point all three indulged in a series of short boards. Tho times at Quarry Point were:— Linnet .. • ■• •• H. 37.5 ■Secret >- ■•«■. ... * *•"•<> Pioioi .. •■ ■• 12-0.25 Each took a. long board and a couplo of short ones to fetch the Gladstone Pior buoy, which was rounded aB follows: Linnet ~« -.... >• 12.9.13 Secret ~« ~.. .-- 13.12.66 Pioioi • 12.14.10 Linnet had a big lead on the run, and with spinnakers set and the tide helping, a fast run was mado at Beef Light. Both Linnet and the Otago representative, lona (formerly the Tom Tit), wore built in Lyttelton by Messrs J. Miller and Co., the work being carried cut by Mr, Magnus Smith, tho company's foreman. MOTOR-BOAT RACE. Although sailing has been foremost in Lyttelton during the past two or three yea,rs, the port possesses some motor-craft with a useful turn of speed. "With the addition of one or two "boats from Redcliffs these made "up a, good race. The Port Levyowned Seabird, the boat which was used at Auckland in the chaso of Von Lucknor, put up a fine performance, although, she bad to be content with second place on her handicap. Besults: — Onawe (Captain B. Hatchwell), 29min ... 1 Seabird (K. Tregerthen), scr .. ■•-. - Kowhai (J. Hankinson), Smin .. .. 3 Minerva (C. Woodward) scr, Pakeha (S. Buchanan) 24min, Nancy (W. The boys' sailing dinghy race was held over a stiff course for such tiny craft. The course was from the Moles, around the Pile Light, thence around a buoy off Gladstone Pier, twice round. It was a, pretty race to watch and the beys handled, their boats with a ski'l that v/ou'd have done credit to much older hands. Besult: Kowhai (S. Sinclair, jun.), scr ... »< 1 Myrtle (T. Newton), 4mir. .. -.. 2 Alert (B. Jeffries), 4irmn .. ..3 Isobel (R. Waddell) 7min, Baffles (C. Brassel) 4min, and Tiki (H. Norris) also started. Kowhai, by the use of good judgment on the part of her owner in choosing his course, took a lap out of the others and won ettsily. ■ Second-class Yacht Knee—Phyllis (G. The course was from the Moles, around th» Pile Light, thence around Bipa Island buoy and back, twice around. It was a good start, tho boats all crossing within a, few seconds, with V-alntai, Waterbeetle, and Pioioi leading. Several of the boats were blanketed by others for a few minutes, but soon drew apait. Phvllis, the scratch boat, had established a big lead at the end of the first round, and ,at the linish had easily beaten her handicap. ■ First-class Yacht Race—Only three boats entered, and they finished: Miro (J. Waddelll 3min, 1; Waimana, (T. HaTkess), scr, •>; Annis (W. A. Miller), lmin, 3. The course was the sums as for the second-class yachta, three times around. Miro got the best of the start, and was followed by Waimana and Aunis in that order. On rounding the Ptle Li"ht, Waimana had siilcd into first position. The boats kept the same places, but with intervals widemngs throughout the race. "Waimana, although finishing first, was placed second on her handicap. ROWING EVENTS. The weather was dull and misty in the morning, with a keen easterly wind which favoured the crews, driving the boats down the course. The water, was excellent for f«t rowing. At midday tho sun shone out stronglv, but later on in the afternoon _ a mist came iw from tho cast agsiin and me wind strengthened, causing an uncomfortable Gobble. Towards the end of the day, however, the mist cleared, and the races were finished .in bright sunshine and very little The course was in the inner harbour, the starting point being the Gladstone Pier and the finishing point a bucy near the docks, thus uroviHing » half-mile course of straight water' Owing to the postponement from the previous day, a number of the crews were scratched.
