SPORTING.

Acceptances for the Stratford Racing Club's Annual Meeting are due tomorrow. Acceptances for 1l:o 'Waiau Racing Chili's Annual Meeting are due tomorrow. Acceptances for the Canterbury Park Trotting Club's Summer Meeting close at noon on Monday next.

Nomination? for the Vincent Joekcy Club's Annual -Meeting close on Mr-n-Jav.

A Tress Association telegram from Auckland says that Bevis was scratched for the .Robinson Handicap at the Auckland Racing Club's Summer Meeting at '.'.HO a.m. on AVeducsday. Kircstiek and Centrepiece were s.-ratclicd for all engagements at the Hunedin Jockey Club's Summer Meeting at 10 a.m. on Wednesday.

Axteil, scr. and Oeo. sci\ were omitted from the list of handicaps published for the J.vttclton Handicap at Hie Canterbury Pa.rk Trotting Club's Summer Meeting.

Throughout the Dominion to-day racing enthusiasts will have plenty to interest them. First and foremost is the Auckland Racing Club's Summer Meeting, which will bo continued on Tuesday next, and on January Ist and 2nd. To'-day and to-morrow there will be racing at Taranaki, Dunedin. Manawatu, aad Wcstland, while the one-day fixtures of the Waipukurau and Kaikoura Racing Clubs will also be held to-day. The Manawatu Club runs a three-day meeting, which will bo concluded on, Monday next.

On Xc\r Year's Day there will be racing at Greymouth, Waiau, Wyndham, Waikouaiti, Hawkc's Eay, Wairarapa, Marton, and Stratford. Trotting meetings will lie held to-day at Gore, Asliburton, and Westport, while several trotting events figuro on the programme for the Kaikoura Racing Club's Annual Meeting. Principal interest for Canterbury sportsmen to-day centres in the Ashburton Trotting Club's Summer Meeting, and it is anticipated that this always popular fixture will bo as successful as any prevously held by the club. Visitors from Christehurch are well catered for by the Railway Department, and it has been arranged that special passenger trains will leavo for Ashburton at 9.20 a.m. and 9.35 a.m. The fields are likely to be of good average size, though not unwieldy, and the class of competitors is well abovo the average. The field for the Ashburton Trotting Cup, 4.36 class, includes some of the best pacers in commission, and there should be a great struggle for supremacy. Great Hope, a brilliant performer, is set to give the limit horses 132 yards' start, a task that could only be accomplished by a real champion, and lie is not likely to be such a popular fancy as Waitaki Girl, Away, or Brutus, all good and solid performers. Whatever wins, the race is sure to be full of interest, and will not be won without a keen struggle. Our special correspondent from Westport telegraphed last evening as follows: —Rain has fallen since noon, and as it looks like continuing, the prospects of fine weather prevailing for tho opening day of the Westport Trotting Club's Midsummer Meeting are not bright. The majority of the visiting horses have arrived, and the fields are likely to be well up to the average of previous years. Eleven useful horses are engaged in the principal race, the Buller Handicap, and a trio with possibilities arc Rapier, Logwood, and Some Wilkes, while in the minor events Linda Dillon, Comfort, Logan Lass, Dulcie Bingen, Ecstasy, Ocean Chimes, and Locanda Rose should race prominently.

Private advice received in Christchurch during the past few days is to the effect that several horses, including Aeron, Glenelg, and Kcan John, -were considerably knocked about during their trip to Wellington, en route to Auckland, this week. Spearmint mares have done well as the dams of winners in England this season. Up to October 23rd. mares by Spearmint hack been represented by ifo TviDners of 3&i rates, of the total value, of £17.530. There were 25 Spearmint mares credited with winners. In stakes, however, St. Frusquin (by St.i Simon) mares were first. Twenty-three had tlrrown 25 winners of 33> races, worth £23,637. Other St. Simon stallions whose daughters Aid specially well up to the date mentioned were Chaucer, Desmond. 'William the Thinl and St. Denis, who were second, fifth, sixth, and seventh respectively in. the list.

T. Tito, the Maori apprentice who was severely injured at the recent Waipa Meeting, is reported to be making satisfactory progress at the Hamilton Hospital.

The two-year-old Kaiti has been doing good work lately, and HawkeV? Bay followers are confident that he will win some of the money at the Manawatu Ttacing Club's' Summer Meeting. Another juvenile well spoken of from tho same quarter is Gold Box, by Tanuaha—Lady Sykes. Avola is galloping well on the tracks at Hniwera and is confidently expected to finish well up in the .Manawatu Cup.

Butter Scotch, who figures in the. Nursery Handica.p at the AVaipulmrau. Meeting, is a filly by Heather "Mixture from Barley Sugar, by Maori .King from Barley Bree, the dam of Itoyal Scotch. It is something like 20 years siiic© an Auckland horse was successful in the Great Northern Derby (says "Plineton" in the "Herald"), and. a. victory for one of the local three-year-olds would be popular. Five of "the candidates for the event this year are Auckland owned, hut their form has not been such as- to give them particularly bright prospects, though Sandstar and Town Bank are possibilities. lam vcrv hopeful concerning Saudstar, who lias been steadily improving with each race, and has left a very favourable impression. Sandstar is .-. handsome and attractivelv bred colt, and on the nicterna.l side traces directly back to that illustrious mare Pulchra. When ]>erl.v day arrives he may be a solid proposition for the southerners. His earlier running at tho meeting should giro some idea, of his chance.

Quinnette and Civility haTe only to get away well, if their track gallops are acted up to. and they must he in the picture. Tliero is room for surprise in both races. The Foal .Stakes candidates responsible for attractive gallops are:—Shirley, Runnvmede, Hyde Park, King's Speech, and Mandanc! and the last-named, if reserved, would be as strongly fancied as any in the Uurserv Handicap. Miss Melvn. has galloped well and may be "the best of the Ancklanders in the Grafton Hurdles, hut whether Bullford is capable of actujg up to the estimate formed of him hy the handicappcr is a much discussed question. Shining Armour and other Derby candidates _ likely to be strongly opposed in the Queens Plate, in which the weight favours three-year-olds.
