NEW AWARD FILED. The Arbitration Court has made » new motor mechanics' award, which, will conw into force on December 29th. The minimum rate of wages for journeymen (motor-electricians, turners, fitters, and motor-mechanics) is fixed at Ss -2d per hour. Workers who arc employed at oxy-acetylcne and electric welding shall bo paid Is per day extra. A moior-e'.ecttician is defined a3 a journeyman who has served five years at the motor trade, in the repair cr construc-tion-etc., of motor-care or raptor-cycles. A motor-electrician is a journeyman who is competent to undertake the repair and ripkeep of the whole electrical equipment ot a motor-car. „ , t , ■ i Hours of wcrk arc fixed at forty-four per week, the time <:f commencing and closm? to be mutuallv arranged in each establishment between '7.50 a.m. and 5.30 p.m. Overtime Is at the rata of time and a half for the fust three hours and double time thereafter. Workers required to commence work between ths hours cf G a.m. and the ordinary time for commencing to be paid time and a half. The award doe- not r.pply to garage or ahop attendants, salesmen, or their assistants. Assistants* wr.ges shall be:—First year, 15s per week; second year, 'iis td per week: third year, 20e per week; fourth year, 373 (id per week; fifth year, 45s per week. Any assistant who, at any time during his service, obtains a certificate in grade- one of mechanical engineering of the City and Guilds of London Institute or passes the annual examination cf the local Technical College for motor engineering, shall be paid 5s per week extra. Overtime- for assistants is fixed at time and a half for the first three hours and double time thereafter; but not less than 9d per hour. A memorandum to the award stales: The principal matter referred to the Court was the question of continuing the former system of assistantsbip. The Court is of opinion that assistants should not be employed if it is possible to provide suitably for the training cf apprentices. It has therefore prohibited the employment cf assistants after the coming into operation of an order under the Apprentices' Ati. 1933, but has made special conditions to t-afeguard assistants already employed as such.
