VICTORIA MEMORIAL.
TO TEX WITOE OF THB PBESB. Sir,—ln answer to Dr. LevThge's let- | ter regarding above, which appeared in this morning's issue,.l might state that when'l visited London just two and a half years ago, I went several times to seo New Zealand's contribution to the Victoria Memorial, which is situato opposite Buckingham Palace. It consists of two 6plendid sculputred statues, which are of generous and Fold proportions, one the figure of a man representing labour, with his hand resting on the head of a lion, the other representing a woman bearing sheaves of corn and a lion by her side. On th© foot of each is inscribed in gilt letters "The Gift of New Zealand." I explained these in a talk at the Christchurch Savage Club one evening, and stated that these two statues (the gift of New Zealand) ■were amongst some of the fin4et that were to bo seen in or around London. Some months after I got back to New Zealand a cable appeared in the Press stating that after great efforts the High Commissioner, Sir James Allen, had been able to get the inscription as quoted above placed upon the Now Zealand Memorial. Yours, etc., C. E.' JONES. Christchnrch, December 22nd.
