ALLEGED FORGERY. (SPECUL TO "THE PEIS3.") GREYMOUTH, December 22. At a sitting of the Magistrate's Court this morning, George Aldridge, who was represented by Mr W. J. Joyce, appeared on remand on a charge of forgery of a wages slip and theft of £3 Is 6d, tho property of Stanley Edward Smcaton. A plea'of guilty was entered on tho theft charge, and accused was committed for sentence. On the charge of forgery, he reserved his defence, and waa committed for trial, bail being renewed. Mining Matters. The mines are working with a reduced number of employees, many having left tho colliery towns on holiday. Most of the Reefton pits havo been idle since Thursday. The Wostport-Stocktoa Coal Company shipped 4586 tons of coal last week, and the Westport Company 9270 tons. Casualty. A painful accident which resulted in tho severing of one of his fingers, occurred to Mr M. Joseph, of Hohonu, when he was cutting wood with an axe. Timber Trade. Many sawnuils have closed down for the holidays, and tho remainder will ccaso work before Thursday. . Tires. The residence of Mr H. E. Wylde, at Barrytown, which was destroyed by fire on Saturday evening, was insured for £250 in the Commercial Union Office. A Bawmill in tho Lake Brunner district was in danger of being burnt to the ground during last week, but the manager and workmen managed to extinguish tho outbreak. Personal. Mrs J. Grimmond, of Ross, left by to-day'a express cn route for Wellington. Mr and Mrs B. Nieper left to-day for Auckland, where they will Bpend three; weeks' holiday. Mr W. Meldrum, S.M., and Miss Meldrum will leave to-morrow for Auckland. Mr and Mrs T. T. Boustridge, of Greymouth, were passengers for ChristI church, cn Touto for Dunedin by toI day's express: Messrs C. C. and G. Davis, of tbe Grey Collieries, Ltd., ' left for Christchurch to-day. Mr G. Bpence, who has accepted as appointment at Auckland, left for the northern city to-day. Four members of the Beban co-oper-ative party—Messrs Moves, Bligh, anA P. and R. Walsh—arrived from Lake Coleridge this afternoon. The wedding was solemnised at Trinity Church this morning of Mr George Medhurst Daniel, of Nelson Creek, to Miss Isobel Elsie Stewart, of Avonsiflo, Christchnrch. Archdeacon Carr officiated. Miss Tilly Stewart, of Hawarden, was bridesmaid, and the bride was given away by Mr C. Page. Mr A. Potts, of Greymouth, was best man. The members of St. Patrick's Church choir presented Miss K. Hannan, whose marriage takes place on Christmas Day, with a seagrass chair, in appreciation of her work as a member. The Rev. Father Long, who was present on the occasion, also handed Miss Hannan a pieco of Irish pottery, on behalf of the parish priests. The death occurred in Sydney at tho week-end of Mr John Stenhouse, a brother of the late Mr James Stenhouse, of Greymouth. The death occurred at Bccfton. on Saturday of Miss Chrissift Cohen, of Black's" Point. The deceased was twenty years of age. The marriage was solemnised at All Saints' Church, Hokitika, of Miss Daisy Cordell, only daughter of Mr A. H. Cordell, of Dannevirke, to Mr George Arnold Thomas, youngest son of Mrs H. Thomas, of Arahura. The happy couple left for Dannevirke, where the honeymoon will be spent. Importations from England. Loeal retail houses are concerned at the growth of the trade in clothing
with England. Many West Coasters arc talcing advantage of the facilities afforded by the Post Offico to buy parcels of footwear, suits, and other necessaries from English firms specialising in this business. It is stated that approximately £2OOO left Greymouth recently in a single month through this channel. ■ Timber Workers' Union, Mr P. L. Turley, secretary of the "West Coast Timber Workers' Union, has received notice of the registration on Saturday of the Northern Wellington Timber Yards and Sawmill Employees' Union. There are now two unions for timber workers in the Wellington district, and tho new organisation will cover employers outside a 25-milc radius of the Capital City. It will be remembered that the move to establish the new union led to hot words at a recent Arbitration Court sitting. WESTFORT ITEMS. (special to "the tkbss.") WES'Ii'ORT. December 22. The Swimming and Surfing Club met in the Town Hall this evening and finalised matters in connexion with the visit of the Canterbury swimmers to Wostport during Christmas week. The personnel of the team is Brough, Keesing, Atkinson, A. Pope, E. Fisher, Misses "Welch and' Mather. Mrs Brown, accompanied by her daughter,' will come as chaperon. The programme* for tho visit includes a demonstration at tho Municipal Baths, and a lifesaving exhibition at North Beach. At a largo and representative ' meeting hold to-night, committees were formed to carry out a suitable programme for tho reception and entertainment of the Canterbury visitors. Several deputations have interviewed tho Buller County Council with a request that the local body should reconsider their motor traffic licensing fees. The Automobile Association recently formed hero is of the opinion that the fees are excessive.'
