CHAMBER OF COMMERCE.
MEETING OF COUNCIL. The Council o£ the Canterbury Chamber of Commerce mot last night, Mr Machin presiding. Others present were—Messrs Norton Francifl, J. E. Broadfoot, ■H. J. Marrinea-, K. Chapman, i'. M. Warren. I'. E. Jones, P. H. Harris. C. J. R. Williams, F. W. Hobbs, A. L. Cropp, C. V. Agar, W. F. Sopcr. E. H. Wiles, P. Davidson, and H. H. Smith. A vote of thanks was accorded the Preliminary Plane Committee for their work in connexion witli the letting furnishing, and altering of tho old City Council Chambers, tne Chamber's new prenusos. The secretary of the executive of the United I'iro Brigades' Demonstration Com mitteo WTO to asking if the president would accept tho position of a vicc-prtaident of tutcommittee. Tho request was agreed to. It was decided t*> ask Mr C. 11. Hewlett to act as treasurer to the Chamber. The British Imperial Council of Commerce forwarded a, copy of a. resolution passed at tho tenth congress of Chambers ot Commerce of the British Empire, suggesting that Boa»ds oi Trades and ChamDcrs should devote a portion oi their energies towards securing that all immigrant from th* British ]sk3 should bo kept as permanent citizens It was also suggested that schemes of emiI gration should be introduced whereby emigrants from Britain could have some preliminary training there and then, under some moro systematic scheme than had hitherto existed, be financed partly by the Home Country' and partly by the colony receiving them in their new venture.. The matter was referred to the Emigration Committee. The matter of selecting a name for the new premiees cf the Chamber watt held over to a later meeting. A. letter from the Land Association, with reference to new rites of commission, wae held over till a. later meeting.
