Tarrant, who has been in charge of tho Miramar and Sentoun police districts in tho past six years, is retiring from tho service on pension at the end of the present month. In 1880 Constable Tarrant joined tho Armed Constabulary, and the following year he transferred to the police. During his 38 years' service he has been stationed in potU the North and Soutfi Islands. In tho groat flood at Napior in 1897, Constable Tarrant did very good service in rescuing peoplo from flooded houses and shops. The Eev. John Newlantls, who was recently licensed by tho Dunedin Presbytery, lias receivod a call to the Walau Presbyterian Church, North Canterbury. Tho call was considered by the Chrigtc'hurcb Presbytery at a meeting yesterday. The call, which was signed by every communicant \and adherent of the church, was plaepd in the hands of Mr Newlands, who accepted it. Tho induction will talso place on December 4th, the officiating ministers to be the Eevs. W. Bower Black, J. B. Bickerstaft', and Theo. Patcrson. A call was also dealt with to the Eev. F. J. Tylce, of Dipton, Southland, from the Akaroa Presbyterian Church. It waß decided to sustain the call, which v>as practically unanimous, and transmit it to the Southland Presbytery. Dr. Allan George Barnard Fisher, 8.A.. of Melbourne, who has been appointed to the position of Professor of Economics at the Otago University, is a grandson of Mr and Mrs George E. Fisher, and a nephew of Mr John Fisher, Otautau, says the "Southland Times." He is a New Zealander, and was born in Christchurch. In his career both at school and at the University, ho was the winner of scholarships at nearly every examination, his last honour entitling him to a three years' course at the London School of Economics or Oxford or Cambridge Universities. After returning from three years' war service, and before proceeding to London to complete his special studies, he acted as lecturer of psychology, ethics and logic at Melbourne University, and during that time was an associate of Dr. John Smyth. Of Melbourne University, who is himself an old Southlander. Dr. Fisher's only brother and sister have also earned distinction, the former securing his medical degree, being one of the youngest students of his vear, and tho latter having graduated M.A. at Melbourne Methodist Ladies' College. Dr. Fishor is a son of Lieut.-Cojonel and Mrs Allan Fisher, of the Salvation Army, -now of Sydney, who aro both natives of Now Zealand. He leaves London m December for his new appointment.
