A short, but sharp, shock of earthquake was felt at Mastertou at S.o-3 last night. The Commercial Bank of Australia, Ltd., intends to change its place of business to 141 Hereford street, as from Tuesday next.

At the conclusion of the quarterly genera] meeting of the South Island Motor Union last night, the delegates were the guests of the C.A.A. at supper at tho Rendezvous. A ballot, taken among "Wellington shop assistants on the closing hour question, resulted in 460 (votes being recorded in favour of the 0 o'clock late shopping evening, with 9 a.m. starting time, and Saturday half-holiday from 12.30. There were 92 votes recorded againofc the suggested hours. At last night's meeting of th© Canterbury School Committees' Association, Mr 11. Macalister, of Beekenham, gave notice of motion: "That this meeting respectfully calls upon the Government to print and standardise all school books with a view to bringing thein into uniformity, and supply them to the children free." Perry, who have taken charge of the young people's work in the Christehurch Division of the Salvation Army, which includes Canterbury and the West Coast, were given a united welcome by the young peoplo in the Citadel, Victoria street, last night. Life Scouts and Girl Guides marched to tho Citadel, headed by tho band, and took up a position on the platform, where they sang a welcome song. Major A. Miles, divisional secretary, presided, Tho formal welcome was given by Sergeant-Major Taylor, on behalf of the United Juniors' Divipion. | Mrs Wallace spoke for Major Wallace, Divisional Commanded, who was unable to attend. Staff-Captain Perry and Mrs Perry sang a duct and gave addresses. There was a good attendance of adults, as well as young people.
