ASHBURTON.

PERSONAL. Mr J. G. McQuilkin -was yesterday morning sworn in as a Justice of the Peace.

Mr A. H. Todd, who had the misfortune at the recent Labour Day gala to suffer a fractured shoulder, was operated upon in the County Hospital on Wednesday, and is reported to be progressing satisfactorily. The Eight Rev. G. Miller arrives in Ashburton to-day to take part in the St. Andrew's Presbyterian jubilee celebrations.

The following replies have been received from Lord .Tellieoe in answer to the farewell messages forwarded by the Mayor (Mr R. Galbraith) and the Chairman of the County Council (Mr W. G. Gallagher):—County Council: "Am most grateful for farewell message from the county. Good luck to it and to all who live in it." The Mayor: "We are very grateful for the kindly sentiments of your farewell message on behalf of the citizens of Ashburton. Please accept yourself, and convey to them, our warmest good wishes."

Jubilee Celebrations. The St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church jubilee celebrations will extend over a week, commencing from to-mor-row, when the Eight Rev. George Miller, Moderator of the General Assembly, will lay the foundation stono of the new Sunday School. On Sunday Mr Miller will conduct the special jubilee services in the church, and a young people's rally will be held in the afternoon. Arrangements have been made for a garden party to middle-aged and elderly people on Dr. Hunter's lawn on Monday afternoon, while a congregational social in the church, at which the choir will give a special musical programme, has been set down' for Tuesday evening. The Rev. Professor Dickie, of Knox College, Dunedin, has consented to conduct a special jubilee Communion service on December 7th. "

St. Stephen's Gala. Arrangements are well in hand for the gala promoted by'the St. Stephen's Anglican Church. There will be numerous side-shows and stalls, while the First Canterbury Mounted Rifles' Band will play a specially selected programme of music. The chief attraction will be the baby show, for which 50 entries have been received from all over the county.

General. The business to be transacted at the Magistrate's Court this morning is of a varied nature, there being a charge of keeping liquor for sale against a local resident, three juvenile cases of sheepstealing, and some undefended civil cases set down for hearing. Mrs R. Galbraith presided at the monthly meeting of the Ashburton branch of the Mothers' Union yesterday afternoon, when Mrs Nelson Wright, of the Lower Eiccarton vicarage, read an interesting account of the "Pouring Out of the Ointment," interspersed with a number of appropriate comments on various sentences. Mrs Wright was accorded a hearty vote of thanks on the motion of the president, Mrs Galbraith.
