STATE IN LIBEL CASE.

SYDNEY BRIDGE TENDERERS' CLAIM. A writ for alleged libel has been issued in London by Sir William Arrol and Company,- Limited, one of the unsuccessful tenderers for the North Shore bridge (Sydney), against the State Government of New South Wales. Tne nominal defendants are: —Mr H. T. Ball (iUmister for Works), Mr X. B. Cooper (Under-Secretary tor Works), and Dr. J. J. C, Bracineld (Chief Engineer and designer of the bridge). " It is the intention of the Government to defend the action.

While nothing definite has been stated in the writ concerning the alleged libel it is believed that it refers to a paragraph on page 23 of Dr. Bradfield's report to the Government on thte tenders received by the Government for the bridge. This paragraph, which is contained in the review of the tender of Sir W T illiam. Arrol and Co., Ltd., reads: —"This steel appears to be quite satisfactory, but the working stresses have been taken as those allowable under the specification for nickel steel ,which must have a minimum yield point of 500,0001b per square inch, and are too great for the material pronosed." While no amount of damages is stated, it is believed that, the claim is in the neighbourhood of £30,000.
