thieves abroad. (SPXCIAL TO "tH* PHISg. ') GREYMOUTH, November £O. During the night two shops in the business portion of Greymouth were broken into, and sums of money taken. It was discovered this morning thai the cash register in Duneau McLean's shop in Mawhera Quay had been interfered with, and the sum of £S taken. Further investigation showed that the shop had been entered from the rear, a winaow being left open by the intruder, tae same methods had been used at the shop in Tainui street occupied by Mr J. Murphy, boot repairer, who found that a thief had entered his premises by the back door and taken £4 10s. _ It is understood that the police have in hand several reported eases of cargo pillaging, and that a charge is pending against a suspect. The premises of Peter Stephens, mercer, Revell street, Hokitika, were burglariously entered by the back door being forced some time last night, shirts and other clothing to the value of about being taken; also a small amount in silver. The same owner's premises on the opposite side of the street were the scene of a burglarv some ten mouths ago. New Signals, The now electric signalling apparatus on the railway between Otira and Moana, the installation of which lias been completed, will be tested on Saturday. Lord Jellicoe. The Mayor of Greymouth (Mr W. H. Parfitt) has received the following tele- | gram from Lord Jellicoe in response to his farewell message:—We appreciate highly your message of kindly farewell from the citizens of Greymouth, to whom we send greetings and good wishes. Wells, chairman of the Westland County Council, has received the following reply to his valedictory telegram to Lord Jellicoe:—Please assure people of Westland County of our heartfelt thanks for their cordial farewell message. At Holy Trinity Church to-day, MiThomas Gibson Harvey was married to Miss Ellen Louisa Mac Lean. Archdeacon Carr officiated. Miss C. MacLean was bridesmaid, and Mr K. Wells best man. A reception was held after the ceremony at Harker's Tea Rooms, and. the happy couple left later for Westport, where they will spend their honeymoon. Juveniles Defeat Police. A carefully-prepared trap arranged by the police and Traffic-Inspector Sloss for cyclists using the footpaths in Blaketown and Preston road resulted in only a meagre catch yesterday afternoon, a party of children stationing themselves at a point on the road and warning those who were erring. Torrential rain, accompanied by a strong north-west wind, is falling and heavily taxing the carrying capacity of the street channels. Hokitika Borough Council. A meeting of the Hokitika Borough Council was. held last evening, the Mayor (Mr G. A. Perry) presiding. Messrs Stuart and Chapman, Ross, notified the Council that there was now a prospect of a block of bush on the Main South road being, set aside as a scenic reserve. It was decided, in. view of the refusal of the Main Highways Board to assist in the upkeep of main highways passing through Hokitika, to make further representations. The Hokitika Athletic and Cycling Club, the Caledonian Society, and the Greymouth Waterside Workers' Union were granted the use of Cass square on December 6th, December 31st, and January Ist respectively. It was agreed to ask the Valuation Department by telegraph for a reply to the Council's request for a new valuation of the borough. Mr David Mclvor was appointed overseer from thirteen applicants. ■ WESTPORT ITEMS. (special to "thx phess.'') WESTPORT, November 20. ■ Miss Turner, State dental nurse, has completed her duties in Westport and returned to Wellington. Mr Somcrfield, traffic manager for the past two years at Westport, has retired on superannuation, and leaves in company with his daughter on, Monday to make his future home in Auckland. Tlie'Buller A. and P. Association's Committee met last night and transacted preliminary business*in connexion with the forthcoming show. It was decided to canvass for entries. Mrs J. Bird, of the Technical High School Board of Managers, will deal with the juvenile entries. It was resolved to ask the Hon. A. 1). MeLeod to attend and open the show. Miss Thornton, art mistress at the Technical High School, left on her return to Christchurch on Tuesday morning. Miss Poison will temporarily till the vacancy. |
