CRICKET.
ELLESMERE V. NORTH CANTERBURY.
The annual two days' representative match between the North Canterbury and Ellesmere was commenced on the Rangiora Domain yesterday in very hot weather. The wicket waa fust, but owing to the overabundance of grass the outfield was slow. North Canterbury went to the wickets first and compiled 238, but Ellesmere failed to save a follow-on. Horo-rata-Glentunnel 52 (Willis 12) and 99 (Pereival 25). The successful' bowlers for Sheffield were Fraser four for 31, M. L. Page three for 16, and Wright two for 2. Gilligan, interviewed after the match, said be was very pleased to win against a team containing so many good' mea as New South Wales. The luck of the wicket was about evenly distributed, though England was favoured a little yesterday. He paid a tribute to Collins's sportsmanlike action in proposing that the game be finished yeaterday, when everything was in England's favour. Ho was very satisfied at the team's performance on the ' first hard wicket of the tour. There was no doubt the side was improving with mateh practice. BOWLING ANALYSIS. (AUSTRALIAN AKD H.Z. CABLE ASSOCIATION.) SYDNEY, November 26. The correct analysis in the bowling in the EngUnd-New South W*lea second innings gave Tyldosley six for 83. Collins was caught by Strudwick, the bowler being Gilligaa.
ENGLISH COMMENT. LONDON, November 25. - The "Evening Standard," commenting on the English team's success in Sydney, states thai it v/aa a. thoroughly workmanlike victory, not due to any individual triumph, but of team work, which was the beat of signs for the future.
