On Tuesday last, when the steamer Treworlas was bound from Ocean laland, a fireman named John Jacob, a West African, W33 stabbed to death on the forecastle deck by a member of the Indian crew named Medi Doran. Doran was immediately placed in irons, and handed over to the police on arrival at Newcastle. He was later charged with murder. The two men had been working together as greaser and fireman respectively since the beginning of the voyage. Owing to Doran's bad temper there had been frequent quarrels. Jacob was leaning over the deck rails when Doran attacked him with a knife, and before he had time to grapple with his assailant he was stabbed. The attack was bo sudden that other members of the crew were unable to intervene.
