QUESTION OF BACKLOADING. RESOLUTION OF GREY CHAMBER OF COMMERCE. {special to "the FUSS.") GREYMOfTH, October 11. The Grey Chamber of Commerce discussed a proposal by the Canterbury Progress League that Canterbury should receive a rebate in back-loading freights. Mr Allan Smith said that the effect this concession would have 011 the port must decide the Chamber in its attitude to the proposal. If the concession were granted by the Railways at all. it should be operative on both sides of Otira Mr McLean said that the proposal was not just, as it would give Canterbury an >.:uoqual advantage, so far as freights arc concerned. He would move: "That the Minister for Railways and the General Manager be requested to acquaint this Chamber of any proposal that, lv.av bo under consideration with regard to preferential railway tariff to "the West- Coast and vice versa, to enable the Chamber to consider such proposals before anv decision is arrived at bv the Railway authorities, and that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to tie- member for the disThis was seconded by Mr \V. 11. Parfit t, who expressed his disapproval of the one-sided advantage that would accrue to Canterbury. If 1 heproposa! were acquiesced in by the Railway De partment it would be detrimental to the volume of revenue earned by the port. . The motion was earned.
