The chairman reported thai in comjxiE': with. tho clerk hp. had attended a, meeting railed by the Wairewa. County Council to discuss hospital levies. Tho chief remits discussed. related to the basis of allocation cr Ibe levies, and it, vraj; agreed to surest. vbat the. levies ehould bo on .c- fhird population and two-thirds valuation. Another remit provided that tho Ho?pitil Board should make provision for pav•o: patient?. It was stated that a. great, number of citizens who were able and °wilimg to pay were debarred from getting the expert service obtainable at tho -cneral hospital. It -was felt, that if » ward were provided io which tho outside medical practitioners could send their patients, and still continue (heir visits, such a ward would b.icomo more than self-supporting and tho doctor would rcceiv? his customary fee.-. The cuestioo of the franchise in combined dis- * riots Tvhich includes both, counties and -pernrp.va smill borough, was discussed. Tho opinion was held that in these combined districts only rat<T>ayc:'? should vote. A-, prewrt it. would be possible fo.- the borough residents exorcising a. residential (fuaJifiration to outvote easily all tho rest, of the district compered of Counties exercising p. ratepayer's franchise. The chairman ' and clerk wore, thanked for their Tepori. Mr Levi Ijowe, of Koilepton, wrote returning an Account for work done on. his frontage. The clerk was instructed to inform Mr Low that 'he amount must be paid.
Mr George Harper wrote with regard to 1 the vesting of a!) tho reserves in the * County Council. Advico was received from Mr Geo. harper that the Council had power to remove from tho side of any road any obstruction m tho natural watercourse placed there, by a ratenaver or his predecessor in title, and accordinglv the clerk was authorised (o servo notico to ratepayer* ■.v'bnrc f-.ncea across watercourses caused a diversion of Btorm water along road 3. In reply to a, communication irom ino South Island Motor Union, it, was decided to write to the Minister of Internal Affairs suggesting tha.t, the registration and control oE motor vehicles be placed in the hands of the police, instead of tho Tost Office officials. Tho clerk was instructed to make application for the payment of £I2OO from the loan of £2OOO to cover payments mad® or shortly to be. due in regard to tie two houses, the building of which is already in hand. Mr Geo. Harper advised) the Council as t o their powers in regard to compelling owners to cut down trees that overshadowed roads to their detriment, or which obstructed the view of motorists at corners. The c'.erk was instructed to serve notice to owners in certain cases where hedges were a source of danger to the travelling public. An application being received from tho West Eyreton Recreation Ground Management Committee for a loan- towards the cost of the erection of a pavilion, it was decided to get. legal advice as to the Council' 3 powers to make such loan. Eight tenders were received for the erection of a five-roomed cottage at, Ohoka, for sums ranging from £653 to .£BBO It waa decided to accept the tender of Mr D. M'. C'orlct, at £0.).",. The clerk reported that a very gratifying responso had been received from ratepayers through the offer of a 5 per cent, discount if rates were paid within a month of notices being sent out, and that three-fifths of the j total amount, had come in, leaving tho Council with a credit balance of £1133 and a fairly assured finance for the rest cl the yea r. Mossrs Jones and waited od tho Council in an endeavour to havo the stream running through their propertirfi. and that, of Mr Abbott placed in the hands of the Council to be clea-ned by contract at regular intervals instead of by tho three owners, as at present. It was decided to endeavour to have some such arrangement made. Mr Major again waited on the Council regarding having the County electrical system continued to his residence, offering, if the current ho took was not sufficient, to pay full interest on the cost or construetion, to pay a bonus sufficient- to make tho outlay a payable proposition to tho Council. The details being satisfactorily arranged, it was decided to make the. connexion 8.3 soon as Mr Major bad eigned the agreement. p It was decided to make Tep?ir3 to tho Clarkville-Bennctts main highway, between Honelville and Bennetts. The engineer reported further work required on the Main North road with the } scraper, and that at, least once a,. fortnight this road ehonld bo given a run over; that good Work had been done in the planting of the Reserve; that with the completion of the metalling contracts at Eyreton the roads in the Eyre riding were all in fair order, and with a small amount of patching should remain 60 through tho summer; and that Forties Bros, had progressed Well with the building at West Eyreton, which should
