SOUTH MAIN TRUNK.
CANTERBURY INVESTIGATION. (SPBCIAL TO "THS PHB3S.") BLENHEIM, October 2. The itinerary for the investigation to be made by the Railway Committee of the Canterbury Progress League into the possibilities of the South Island Main Trunk line was indicated by Mr E. F. Goulter, the president, at a meeting of the Marlborough Progress League. Leaving Christchureh on October Slat, the party would proceed by rail to Parnassus whenee, with horses and pack animais, they would travel over the proposed railway route to Kaikoura, this trip being estimated to occupy two days. They would probably stop a couple of days at Kaikoura and would also stop at the Clarence, and would cover tha whole of the intervening country, finally putting in a couple of days in Blenheim, where they would take evidence in regard to the potentialities of the proposed line. The committee did not wish to be entertained.
On Mr W. T. Churchward's suggestion, the secretary was instructed to write to the South Marlborough Progress League (Kaikoura), asking that body to meet the visitors there and put any information possible before them. It was also decided that the Marlborough League should meet the visitors at the Clarence and escort them over the northern part of the territory, which would be served by the line, the co-operation of the Flaxbourne Settlers' Association and Flaxbourne Farmers' Union to be invited in arranging for representative settlers to meet the Canterbury Committee at various points and place evidenee before it. It was also decided to entertain the visitors at a Bmall informal dinner in Blenheim, to give an opportunity of discussing the railway project in a conversational manner.
