THE OLD CHURCHES.

TO THE KDITOB OP "TEE PkISS." Sir,—ln the interesting correspondence in your columns some weeks, ago, on tho subject of the old churches of the diocese, it -was mentioned that there was. a. mistake in Mr Purcbas's book as to the date of tho building of Woodcnd Church, which he had put down a* 1877, when it was really built in PSoO. ' 1" tnis month's ••Church News,'' .T.L.W. euggests what T tlnuk is the. true explanation,, that 1577 may have been tiie date of the consecration of.the church, i believe, though 1 havo not an actual record or the fact—that 'the church was consecrated oil Juno Ilth (St. Barnabas Day) IS7V. Why-it had not been con-'sec-rated when iirst built, 1 cannot say, but after the departure of the Rev. J. Raven, for England., tho district had ho vicar till the appointment of tho Rev. H. Gould—afterwards Archdeacon •of. Oamaru, in the spring or 1876. The Sunday services till (I .think) 1870, were taken 'by the Rev. James Stack, •then living at Tuahiwi. . If there are any old riles of the "New Zealand Church News," the Julynumber for 1877 would probably havo an-account of the consecration of the church.—Yours, etc., ' arj} COLONIST,- •
