NOTES OF THE DAY. (Uy ".lisstr.") LOCAL CLUB FIXTURES. Sairjcv. Men's Clcb. Saturday, September L'7th-Clnb ' ha, f P ' t r, v P and Cos Cup. First round ot pLijAvondalc. Men's Club._ September • -JSth— End-of-jeason •iourne>. Harcwood. Week-end. Open uaic. A phenomena] round wa.-> rccoi j.ed by the players in a four-ball bcot ball match at I? i dam on d Hill links during tho week-end. The best ba.il f.r the first nine boles was ar -d * or _ second So, making total ot / or ten strokes below bogey. ' Some exceptionally good scores were returned by the contestants hi the, mixed four-ball bogey tor the Larh Denniston Memorial <. up at. llaglcv on Saturday, when three c.onple> ti rr l first place with fivo tip oti bogey, an at least fifteen couples were two up or better. Saturdav was the closing day at Hagley, but the course will remain open for play for a few weeks longer, although the programme events arc concluded. The list of those who have qualified for. the club championship at bhirley appears in another column, and many familiar names aie missing this year. A. W. Clouston, who has had the lowest qualifying scores before,' and who made the best score —7l—in tho first round this rear, was unable to play in the second round on account of illness. Several others fell so far behind in the first round they could not make up the difference, whiio one player, who quali-fied--in tenth position, discovered after the round on Saturday that he had neglected to enter for the event, and so was out of it Among the new names this Tear are K. A. Wilson, late of Invercargill, E. J. Pumphrey, L. H. Campbell, P. IL Wood, and A. E. Blank. The first round of tho play-off takes place next Saturday, and the draw for opponents will be announced during the week. L.. Quin, the new amateur champion, had a warm reception tendered him when he arrived in liltham- from the championship meeting. The local band was at tho station to meet his train, and when he alighted they played "See the .Conquering Hero Comes," and Quiii was carried shoulder-high under an arch of golf clubs held by members of the club. A Large number of his friends and locai citizen*, were present.,, and speeches of wehwimo and congratulation were made; cheers were given, then thoy' sang "For He's a. Jolly Good Fellow.'' Quin, in reply, said he was •very pleased at the warm, welcome home from so many good friends. Speaking of the match, he said the semi-final had been a good game, but ho felt confident, all the time ho could win it. In the final -he was in good form all the way, and had no misgivings from the start. Ho could assure .his friettds he would do his best to retain tho title, and hoped to-be again successful next year. Quin was fhen escorted to the. .ccntro of the town, by a procession of golfers, headed by three members of the-Eltham Pipo Band., Concerning the putting-greens and the placing of tho holes at Middlemore during the Open Championship, the Auckland "Star" correspondent states: "Comment on the course -must necessarily be short, but for stroke play perhaps.some cause for difference of opinion could be found in the placing of several of ■ tho holes in remote positions on the greens. It is a generally accepted principle that tho holes should be, as far as possible, in a central position on tho green. My own impression is that as almost perfect turf surrounded the hole, and the positions called for a greater degree of skill and accuracy, tho placing was justified, although in conflict with the accepted principle. Moreover, the fact of rough being almofjfc conspicuous by absence, and tho bunkering anything but ■ severe, tends to make the action thermo're justifiable." Tho position was that the turf round the greens might, have been good, but the greens were considerably larger than those ,on most New Zealand courses, and many of them contained a larg9-amount of clover. Putting over clover is more a matter'of luck than judgtnent when a putter is us;d." DUNCAN'S FINE FORM. LUSK OVERWHELMED. . (SFXCIA-L TO ."THE rUZSS.") AUCKLAND, September 21.
