Senator La Fo'lette r s candidacy, which was very mut-ii overshadowed during and immediately after the Republican and Democratic Convention by important occurrences therein, is now assumiug greater importance and commanding the greatest interest. Unofficial straw votes conducted in various parts of tho country
by various organisations nearly ail show Mr Coolidgo leading, with Senator La Toilette a very strong second and Mr Davis a very poor third. It is remarkable to note the diverse elements composing the La Pollette supports. They are successfully overlooking their own differences and uniting to further Senator La Toilette's fortunes, which., however, move forward under the handicap of insufficient funds and inexperienced party organisation. Mr Wilbur called at White House and after a conference with Mr C'oolidge stated that a special Board would be appointed to investigate the relative value of air. submarine, and surface craft, with a view to the adjustmei of the Budget. Ho declared his speedier ou the Pacific coast wore not mentioned during tho conference. These, lie said, had been misroported. For instance, he did not say thoro were antagonistic peoples in the Pacific, but ho did say there were opposing civilisations.
