Alma Rhodes (Mr 11. K. McDeujair, a;red •21 years, appeared on teniand on a- charge o; heme an idle- ar.d disorderly person. Tho Magistrate said she needed a stron? hand over her. She was convicted snd ordered to come, up for sentence within Imonth3, on tho condition that she remained for that- period with the Sanation Army. NAME- SUPPRESSED. A 20-year-o'd youth (Mr J. B. Batchelor) pleaded guilty to having stolen a suit- caso and contents, valued at £lO, the property of Hush Donald McCarthy. Cldef-Detective C«;b?on stated that nccused sto'e the bar, which contained samples, from the railway station on Friday Accused was remand"*! for a week, and his name was suppressed in the meantime. MAINTENANCE. Albert George Haines was remanded to appear at Wellington on Tuesday on a charge of having failed to maintain his wife. ATTEMPTED SUICIDE, Annie Louisa. Jury was charged with having attempted to commit suicide. Sergeant Quartermain said that the woman had drunk spirits of salts. Hrr husband said tlut Mrs Jury had si* children by a. former husband, who had cuct-cdy of them. Accused said she. drank the poison in a fit- of temper. Tho Magistrate remanded her a week, on the condition that she stayed with the* Salvation Army authorities. He intimated she would be discharged it the authorities' report- was favourable.
IN OTHER PLACES. NEW TRIAL REFUSED. (press association telegram.) lIAMILTOX, September CO. In the Supreme Court counsel applied for a new trial in the, case in which MVs Marjory Lav.rcncc was awarded £2OOO damages in Auckland a few weeks ago, on tbo grounds 01 negligence by Ihe defendant, arf medical practitioner in treatment for canerr. Tbo grounds of application were that the verdict -was against the -weight of evidence, thai the damages -were excessive, and that, the judge misdirected the jury. The, application wa3 refused oy Mr - Justice Stringer.
SUPREME COURT SESSIONS. (PEKSS ASSOCIATION TKLEGEAIf.) HOKITIKA, September 21. Tho Supremo Court session, heforo Mr Justice, Adams, was opened this morning. Only one criminal case came up for hearing, Basil Gibbons being charged -with breaking and entering and theft, and also with receiving. Thn jury, ofter ten minutes, returned a verdict of not guilty.
