General News.

Journalists received a pat on the back at this week's Wellington Kotary Club luncheon. While speaking on tho subject of intelligence tests, Professor E. Alarsden, Assistant-Director of Education, made the statement that of all people who had been tested under the system, journalists or the children of journalists came out of t-he ordeal the best.

It is understood (says the "Dominion") that Mr Pemberton Billing, of London, who is greatly interested in tho gramophone business, intends to set up a factory in Wellington for the manufacture of gramophone records. He is now in Sydney oil a similar mission, and after setting up a factory there will come on to Wellington. It is understood that in addition to making new records be will import moulds of records of good English and Continental artists, and from these stamp replicas in any number required.

At the final meeting; of the Canterbury College Scientific Society helu last night. two papers ware read on the "Measurement of Small and Large Quantities,'' by Mr H. Henderson and Mr H. F. Baird respectively. No objections were received to the Tramway Board's main roll prepared in connexion with the general election of members in November. Copies of the main roll will be available, it is hoped, about the middle of next month. "I assure you that these are not cushy jobs either for the workmen or for the engineers "'ho have to look after them," said Mr S. I. Crookes at Auckland in describing some of the stupendous schemes for hydro-electric development. which are now being carried out in California. "In one part of ths High Sierras work is going forward at an altitude of 10,000 feet, • and the men are above the snowline all the year round. The tunnel is being cut through solid granite to got Hip necessary fall from a chain of lakes up near the summit of the mountains. The tunnel will be 14 miles long. It was started in 1920. and wi'l be finished ncixt March, a:id will establish a world's record in tunnelling work. Altogether there will be 86 mil = s of tunnels through solid rock in ihese Californian mountain projects, and, remembering: how much we thought of the completion of the Otira tunnel, we can form a faint idea of tlif magnitude of these vast enterprises."
