CABLE RATES.
FURTHER REDUCTIONS IN DECEMBER. (SPSCUIi TO ''THE WELLINGTON, September 18. In the House of Eepresentatives today, replying to a question by the Hon. J. A. Hanan, the Hon. J. G. Coates said that advice had been received from the Pacific Cable Board that the cable rates between New Zealand and Britain would be reduced from December Ist, as follows: — Present rate To be roper word. duced to s. d. s. d. Government rate 1 4J 12 Ordinary rate ..28 23 Deferred rate ..14 114 The Minister added that the ordinary rate many years ago was 10s 2d a word.; then it was reduced to 5s 2d; early in 1902 it was reduced to 3s 4d, and at the end of the same year to 3s; and it remained at that figure until 1915, when it was reduced to the present rate of 2s 8d a word. The New Zealand Government had a large interest in the Pacific Cable Board, and it was now proposed to alter the system of representation on the Board. The secretary of the Post and Telegraph Office (Mr A. T. Markman) had been given authority to make the best arrangement he could, and no doubt he would advise the Government as to the rcßult of the conference on his return.
