NORTH CANTERBURY CENTRE. The North Canterbury Centre .of the Now Zealand Athletic and Cycling Union met last evening, Mr 3. G'. Mackie presiding over a fair attendance. Correspondence. was received from the Halswell Sports Chit) in ' regard to the disqualification of A. Leatham. . It had been stated that that rider had been given permission to start by an official of the club on Boxing Bay, but that was contradicted and the club Btated no such permission was given. It was pointed . \ut by several present that the event was a novelty one and not a cycling race. After discussion it was decided on the casting vote of the chairman to fine Leatham 10s. The Kaiapoi Cycling Club forwarded its annual subscription to the Centre, and tendered ~s resignation, as none of the members now took part in cycle racing and the club had developed into a recreation club. : . The letter was received, and it was decided to ask the club to reconsider the matter of its resignation The New Zealand Union advised that G. Getson's case would be considered ftt the earliest opportunity. , The secretary cf the New Zealand Athletio and Cycling Union wrote stating that it hoped to do something in the matter of establishing annual road races from Ashburton to Timarc and Timaru to Waimate. The Ohoka and Eyreton Club wrote advising that Mr. P. Power had been appointed as the second delegate of the club. Correspondence was received from the Ohoka and Eyretcn Sports Club thanking the Centre for the handictppers who had acted at its meetings, and eulogising the services of those officials. The Ohoka and Eyreton Sports. Club wrote applying for a cycle track championship at its annual sports meetings on January 'lsl. The Ohoka and Eyreton Sports Club wrote stating that it would give £3 3s as a prize to the first bona fide member of the club to finish in the Timaru-Chnst-church road race. It was decided to write to the club asking for a direct donation to the fund, in addition to the amount for the club member. Advice was received from the liew Zealand Union that W. Mackie had been placed on the defaulters' list for refusing to pay a fine of £3 3s. . , The letter was received and it wag decided to write to W. Mackie advising him to pay his fine, and if ho appealed the Centre would support him in his appeal. The Otago Centre wrote stating that lew competitors from that province would comnete in the Timaiu-Christchurch race th.s year It was also stated that ft test race would not take place as public feeling was to write to theOtago Centre asking for a donation towards the Timaru-Christchurch road race. The secretary (Mr P. C. Lucas) re-ported that with Mr W. J. Walter he had gone into the matter of the fimshing place of the Timaru-Christchurch road race. The Show Grounds and Metropolitan grounds were available. The trotting grounds were the most suitable if a gate could be put in in Cutler's road. The difficulty that two clubs were concerned, the Jietropolitin Club and Canterbury Park Club. Some of the members of these clubs were favourable towards the gate being made, but some delay might be occasioned beftore the arrangements could be made. Riccarton racecourse wss mentioned as a suitable place, "and the secretary stated that a "gate" was necessary for the race to be a success financially. _ It was mentioned that a meeting of the Canterbury Park Trotting Club wouid held on July 23rd, and it waa suggested that a deputation from, the Centre wait on the clu- ■ . Several alternate Toutes were suggested from Sock'ourn, so thCT one of the present gates of the Metropolitan grounds could be used. It was agreed that the Metropolitan Trotting ground be acquired for th day, and the matter of the route from Bockburn and entrance to the ground be decided upon later.
