WESTERN JUSTICE.
GUILTY JUNKMEN SHOT. <BT CABLE —PRESS ASSOCIATION COPIBIQBT.) (ACSTBALIAX AKD K.Z. CABLE ASSOCIATION.) PEKING, June 23. In connexion with the death of the American, Hawley, ot Walisien, the Guild authority promises t-o redouble its efforts to prevent molestations of foreigners. Hawley lived for 15 years in Chin#, representing a British firm engaged in river transport of wood, and oil- by steamers. Junkmen, however, resented the intrusion of machinery into the leisurely life of the river, and beat Hawley to death on the beach. Th© commander of tue British warship Cockchafer trained his guns on the city and compelled the military authorities to walk hu.mbly in Hawley's funeral cortege., after which the populace witnessed the shooting of the guilty junkmen. The United States Consul declares that inhabitants and military authorities at Walisien appear to be thoroughly awed by this example of summary Western justice.
