THE RICHMOND SCHOOL.
|lj ' T(J t HE EDITOR Of "THE PBESB."
1 cj r —The deputation from the Rich--1 g c llool Committee which waited I t ]j 6 Education Board have taken if. a very defiant attitude. It is very they mean to proceed with the erection of this brick monument to Lir memory against the wishes of " lie householders, whom they arc supLed to represent. It is very enInrinf to know we have a man in iur midst such as Mr T. Morrow, who L a t least the courage of Ins c»n'ictious to call a meeting, so that we i, ea r the open-air side of the quesril as laid down by Dr. Phillipps. \o\r this is no new idea. It has been tried and proved to be a success largely in \nierica, Switzerland, and in several'cither places in New Zealand, Mr ]) G. Sullivan, M.P., when at the annual meeting of householders, did not approve of 'the open-air school in Richmond, hut after visiting the Sumr f r esh-air school lie has evidently altered his views considerably. I don't think it is of much use suggestian that the Education Board or the School Committee should make such a visit, as their jninds are already made "'jlr 0. Thompson, a member of the Education Board, has said, and has ton supported by Mr Andrews, that the last meeting held in Richmond should not have been held without the consent of the School Committee. What authority have either of those gentlemen to make such an utterance? Do ibey-know that the meeting was held j n a public hall, and the hire of the liall was not paid for bv the Education Board or the Richmond School Committee'? Surely we cannot allow tlie Board to interfere with our priMte affairs. British rule has never Allowed such interference, and I can sssiire vou never will. In conclusion, I would like to give the School Committee a little homely warning; that is, to get bu.sy and have their monument erected before next April, * as the foundation stone will probably bear other names.—Yours, etc., NEARLY STIAG.
