CHOICE FOR TASMANIA,

(8T CABLE—PBESS association coptbioht.) (Australian >sd n.z. cablb association.)

(Received June 23rd, 7.50 p.m.)

LONDON, June 23

The ''Daily Express" says that Mr W. Stapleton Royce, Labour M.P. f« r Holland-with-Boston, is likely to be the next Governor of Tasmania. Ho is an agricultural expert.

I Mr Rovce has been in the Commons since the ~1918 election. He was born inm 1857,. was formerly President or the Holland-with-Boston Unionist Association, and twice stood for 1 arliament in the Conservative interests— out unsuccessfully.] AN ADMIRAL WANTED.

LORD JELLICOE'S SUCCESSOR

(BT CABLE-PBESS ASSOCIATION COFTBIGHT., (Sydney •'Suit" Sebvici.)

LONDON, June 22.

The "Daily Mail" states that a prominent Socialist has been offered the Governorship of Tasmania. He is taking a few days to consider if he possesses sufficient means to^ntertain.^ The Government, add 3 Jhe "Mail," desires to fill such positions with Labourites. Difficulty is being experienced in finding a successor to Lord Jcllicoe who will be acceptable to the New Zealand Government, which desires another admiral, but Labour ranks do not include an admiral. The suggestion that Lord Wemyss be appointed still finds favour in some quarters.

POSITION IN N.Z.

NO GREAT HURRY,

(SPECIAL TO "THE PRESS.")

WELLINGTON, June 23

The statements of the "Daily Mail" regarding the Governorship of NewZealand, as reported in to-day's Press cable messages, do not accurately represent the position. As Lord Jellicoe.New Zealand's present Governor-General, will not be leaving the Dominion until sometime in November, it is evident that there is no great hurry to select a new Gov-ernor-General to" take his place. No doubt communications have passed between the Home authorities and New Zealand; but up to the present there has been no approach to finality. Lord Wester Wemyss, if he would take the position, would no doubt be quite acceptable to New Zealand. In such appointments the Dominions are usually consulted.
