WORKERS' ACCIDENT INSURANCE.

STATE MONOPOLY FAVOURED.

(PBESS ASSOCIATION TEtZGRAX.) WELLINGTON, June 17. The president of the Trades and Labour Couijcil-(Mr J. Read) stated to--day that the members of the council unanimously favoured Stat© monopoly of workers' ,-iccident insurance. Under Stat© monopoly, there was no doubt that cheaper premiums would rule, owing to fclio fact that there would be less overhead charges than under the present ,system, when private companies were competing for tr.ide. It was also held that trouble, which sometimes . arose as at present with' -regard to . workers securing compensation, would not be so likely to arise if. thft State had the monopoly .of the business. It had been unanimously agreed by the council that, the general question of the Compensation for Accidents Act should be referred to the Parliamentary 1 Committee of the Trades and Labour 'Council, and the federatioii committee, , would go into the whole matter.
