OBITUARY.
CAPTAIN STRICKLAND. (BY CABLE —PRESB -ASSOCIATION COTTEIGHT.) (AUSTRALIAN AND N.Z. CABLE ASSOCIATION.) HOBART, June 17. . Just before, the steamer Port Hacking arrived the master, Captain Strickland, was found dead on board. [The late Captain Strickland had been in the employ of the New Zealand Shipping Co. as chief officer and master for a long period. He was engaged on the New Zealand route during the whole of the time he has served, with the company, and has been master of the Port Hacking for the last few years.] ' MR J. HANNA. (PBZSS ASSOCIATION TELEGBAM.) DUNEDIN, June 17. The death occurred to-day of Mr John Hanna, aged 67 years. From 1884 to 1913 he was gymnastic instructor at the Boys' and Girls' High Schools, and for a period acted as gymnastic • instructor to teachers under the Education Board. am d. McClelland. The Ellesmere district has suffered the loss of one more of its-pioneers in Mr David McClelland', Southbridge, who died on June 14th, at the &g6 of 66. The late Mr McClelland was- a native of Diamond, Ulster, which has a claim to fame as being the place where the first Orange Lodge was established in 1795. The deceased was an Orangeman of standing, and his sons are active members of. the Order in | New Zealand. Mr.McClelland est me. to New Zealand in 1875, and. spent practically the whole of his life in the Ellesmere district, ~-where he had) been farming on his own account for about a quarter of- Twelve years ago he purchased « part of the old Beachcroft estate, held previously by the late Mr AV. this area being opposite his original holding. Mr McClelland was a. popular member of the community. The. bereaved consist of three sons, and two daughters: Messrs James, Joseph anrj "\Yilliam McClelland, Mrs H. Montgomery, and' Miss McClelland, and two grandsons. Mr David McClelland, jnn., the second snn, perished in the.Gr&it War. -The funeral took place in the Ellesmere .Public Cemtery yesterday.. The cause. of death was pleurisy, with complications supervening, the deceased having been ill for nine or ten days. MR ,T. CHECKKEY. The death is reported' fr6h\ Pahiatua' of Mr T. Ch'eckley, one of the" early settlers of Canterbury. IJc was born in ; Notts, England, and when only four years of age came to New- Zealand with his parents in the ship Indiana. He was the eldest son of the late Mr George Checkley, of Mt. Pleasant, Akaroa. He received his early education on the Peninsula, but 30 year's ago he weht to . the North Island.and made a home for. himself in the dense bush. He was' one of .the first to engage in the dairying industry in the Eketahuna district, and largely owing to his efforts a cheese factory was instituted. He ( was prominent in local politics. Deceased, who was seventy years of age. at the time of his, death, is survived by a .widow and three sons, and three daughters. Mr J. J. Checkley, of 'Christchurch,. is.a brother of, the deceased. "The late Mr George Checkley,, late of Akaroa and Weld's Hill, Nelson, was also a brother of the deceased gentleman. , One of the oldest and best-known of JTew ' Zealand, 's surveyors," Mr Oliver Mason; Creagh, died' at < Atfcklaiid fclast week, at . the 'age of ' ninety-one years. Mr Creagh, who was born in the South of Ireland, came to New Zealand 58 years ago. The late'Mr Creagh was the only one of four brothers who did not enter the Army. Two brothers were killed in the Crimean. War, and the third, Major Creagh, died comparatively recently. Mr Creagh surveyed: numerous blocks of native land in all parts of the North Island, and had .many' exciting experiences. He retired from surveying about 11-years ago, and had since resided with his daughter in Epsom. He leaves two sons, Mr G. C. Creagh, chairman of the Auckland, Stock Exchange, ; and Mr Oliver P. Creagh. •
