PEAT BOG ON FIRE.
JDelow the Mount Richmond,; ant ■the' Camp Farm, and running parallel wfui ilie Portage road at Otahuhu (Auckland) a peat fire has been burninn steadily since December. . The originating cause was the burning off of some dry thistles nearby, but no one could have expected that it would continue for eight months. Up to the present over - tour acres have been aft'ected; and there is a protiaimity of another three acres beattacked. :The teat is over lOrt n\"dep-"n; and possibly contains sonie heavy timber. " _ • :. •About three months ago tno Borqugn Council attempted;: to stein the fire,havinir a.trench dug; sft and sft deep, but without avail. "It is fortutate that there are no houses in the immediate vicinity. Fears are entertained for one house, however, though it is still about two chains away. At the past rets of progress it wITi reach the house _in about three montTis unless something can be done to check it. It was hoped that the re-ent heavy rains. Ti-ould. have been sr.rjneut to put it. out, but. the only result ha 3 been clouds of steam, giving the impression of a miniature Whakarewarewa.
