Bayfield, Government tourist agent at Christchurch, and Mrs Bayfield, who have been spending several weeks on the West Coast, returned to Canterbury by Saturday's express. Captain J. Green, formerly in command of the ill-fated Ngahere, has returned to Greymouth in charge of the Kamona. Mr J. Parminter is second officer on the latter vessel, and held a similar position' on the Ngahere. Messrs Cameron and J. F. Grierson (Christchurch) and J. H. Greenwood (Westport) have been appointed the representatives of the insurance companies on the Westport Fire Board. Mr D. McCaskill, inspector of ; schools, was met yesterday morning by a representative gathering of school teachers, who. assembled to accord him a farewell on the eve of his impending departure for the Hawke's Bay district. Mr H. H. Allison presided, and presented Mr McCaskill with a suitcase. A similar gathering honoured Mr McCaskill in the afternoon at Hokitika. •< The death occurred at Reefton Hospital yesterday morning of Mr James D. Smith, of Waiuta. The deceased was a native of Gundagai, New South Wales, and 38 years of age. He was at one time a representative footballer. A. widow and five young children arc left to mourn their loss. Magistrate's Court. At a sitting of the • Magistrate's Court, yesterday, before Mr W. Meldrum, S.M., Robert Steele, charged with drunkenness, resisting the police, and obscene langua'go at Dunollie, pleaded guilty to all charges. Mr W. P. McCarthy appeared for defendant. Accused was convicted on all charges, and ordered to come up for sentenco when called on, and a; prohibition order was taken out against him. . Port ■■ Busy. ■ There was great activity in shipping circles during the week-end; and Saturday afternoon saw nine vessels at the wharf. A number departed' this morning,- however, and the waterfront now bears its usual appearance. / v The Weather. Melntyre, M.L.C., has written to Minister.of Public Works protesting against the slow progress being made with the Buller Gorge; railway, and. pointing,out that the.
