CANTERBURY MARKETS.

(BT OXTR COMMERCIAL EDITOB.) Tuesday Evening. The oat market has quietened down somewhat. There is still a good deal of covering of forward sales to be done, but operators are delaying as much as possible. There is practically nothing offering from growers. Up to 5s on trucks is being offered by merchants for B's.

Chaff has taken another firming in price, and up to £7 has been paid farmers at nearby country stations. Orders have come from Auckland during the pnst few days, due no doubt to the indifferent quality of some of the imported chaff. In view of the fact that Canterbury chaff this year is heavy, there being such a short straw growth, the quotation of £7 per ton is not out of the way in comparison witli the price of oats. There is no alteration in potatoes. The singular feature about the market is that Dakotas are making more than whites. Tlie former have sold at £0 5s f.0.b., s.i., and whites at £5 17s 6d, quotations on trucks being .to £-1 17s Cd for Dakotas and £4 10s to £4 15s for whites. Growers will not discuss business under the latter price. The Navua last week took close on 4000 sacks for Auckland, but the market is still well supplied in that centre. A fair shipment was despatched during the week to New Plymouth. There is no alteration in seeds.

The following are the quotations to be paid to farmers at country stations, free of commission, sacks extra, except where otherwise stated:— Wheat (new season's prices)— Tuscan 5s 4d, Hunters 5s 6d, Pearl 5s Bd, f.0.b,, Lyttelton.
