THE WEATHER.

WELCOME RAIN

After a lengthy spell of dry weather, the sky yesterday became overcast, and for the first occasion for a long time the city man thought it was necesstu-y to take liis overcoat with him to business. The day continued threatening, and shortly before noon a light warn* rain commenced to fall. It lifted after about an hour, but c-amo on again later, continuing all the afternoon and into the early part of the evening, when the weather again became fine, although rain was "in the air." The showers wore welcome in the city, and will do a lot of good to gardens, but had fifty times the quantity of rain fallen no harm would have been doho, so parched was the earth. Eain has threatened in Timaru for the past two days, and last evoning a drizzle commenced at about 6 o'clock (tclographa our corespondent). It was not sufficient to do a great amount of good, and signs of clearing up appeared later. A good downpour is i eagerly awaited.
