Mr Gilbert Carson, who for the greater part of half a was one of the most prominent public nien. in Wanganui, and indeed in Now Zealand, tfied this afternoon, aged SI years. 110 was born at sea a fortnight Wore the ship on which his paronts were passengers arrived at Anckl.ind. In 1874 ho bought tho "Wnngnnui Chronicle," of which ho was the editor until ill-health occurred. Aiforwards ho was associated with tho paper in thei role of director , till six years ago, when a seizure incapacitated liini, and also mndo necessary his retirement from the Legislative Council, in which he had oocupied a scat for nine .veal's. Ho was member for the district for three years, and «it various times occupied the following positions in Wnngnnui:—Mayor, Borough Councillor. Chairman of thrt Education, Harbour, and Hospital Boards, library and Museum Trustees and Girls' College Hoard of Governors. He was a prominent member of the Baptist Chnnli, and an ex-I'rosident of the Baptist Union. Mr Carson was a leading spirit iti the prohibtion movement from its inception, nnd wis also a well-known Freemason. being a past master of t-ho St. Andrew Kilwinning Lodge.
