Sunday was one of the warmest days experienced so far this month. -The heat, however, was not oppressive, and the conditions were delightful for motoring and other pastimes. The highest temperature registered during the day was 82.4 dj j -ee*. Yesterday was warm, but a cool eastonly tempered the atmosphere considerably. Police Court. In the Timarn Police Court yesterday morning, before Mr E. D. Mosley, S.M., a first offender for drunkenness was iined 10s, in default 24 hours' imprisonment, with hard labour. Death by Drowning. A lad named Walter Jamieson, aged four years, son of Mr and Mrs R. Jamieson, Buxton Settlement, Temuka, met his death by drowning on Saturday afternoon last. The boy was playing with his younger brother near a house in course of erectino. The younger boy went home, saying that Walter was in the new house. 'l'ha father, surmising that something was wrong, went over, but could not eee his son. A sump at thp end of an, open drain contained about seven feet of water, and with the assistance of Mr F. C. Roberts this was explored, and the body of the boy found at the bottom. Two doctors -were sent for, and artificial respiration was attempted for, an hour, without; success. At the inquest Dr. Scanneli said lie had found Mr Jamieson and Mr Roberts trying artificial respiration. He administered a stimulant and continued the artificial respiration for about an hour, but life was extinct. " In his opinion, death wag due to drowning. Tho Coroner, in returning a verdict that death was due to the child falling into a sump and being drowned, expressed the deepest sympathy with the parents. Labour Party. The Labour Partj r met in Timaru on Saturday, Mr P. J. Kelly presiding. I'he chairman referred to the illness of ;Mr E. J. Howard, M.P. for Christchurch South, sad Mr T. Wade, of the Tiiiiaru branch. The meeting expressed its; sympathy and hope for their speedy recovery. Nominations of officers for the incoming half-year, were received as follows:—President, Mr P. J. Kelly; vicepresidents, Messrs R. Walker and E. O'Brien; secretary and treasurer, Mr 3. Lang; executive, Messrs E. W. Jones. C.'Hudgo, F. Ward, G. T. Roller, W. Watson, A. H. Smith, W. Tutton, J. Bus-ten,-W. McTie'r, and P. J. Sullivan; auditors, Messrs Chapman, McTier, and Rudge; delegates to the L.R.C., Messrs S. Lang, P. C. Vinnell, and P. Ward. The election takes place at the' next meeting. A good deal of .time was spent discussing the Power Board's loan projiosals, and the general feeling of the meeting was that all should endeavour to get the fullest possible information, as this was one of the biggest undertakings put before the publie of South Canterbury. Members were urged to attend all public meetings wJiich dealt with this quastion. WAIMATE. Tho local Tennis Club journeyed to Oarnaru on Saturday and played Hill Club iu the senior competition. After a most enjoyable game Waimate won by 13 sets to 11. A painful accident happened to a little boy on Sunday evening which necessitated liis removal to the hospital, where an operation was performed. He was walking along the kerbing of the footpath with a, stick ill his mouth and slipped, wpth a result ihat the stick penetrated the root of his mouth, making a nasty gash. A meeting of the committee of the Jlacing Club was held on Saturday ■evening. Present: Messrs T. Twonioy the chair), M. Leonard, J. Matlieson, E. C. d'Auvergne, M. Coney, J. A twill, and J.' Cooney. The secretary of the New Zealand Racjing Conference wrote asking for particulars of the liabilities of the Club, including bank overdraft, if any. The agreement between the caretaker and the Club ivas approved. The sub-committee reported that the erection of fences had been completed and the levelling of the ground where the old buildings stood had been satisfactorily attended to. Messrs J. Bryson and W Taylor were elected members. Messrs H. Willets, and K. Ollivier were nominated for the position on the committee va-

rated by T. Quirk. A ballot was taken and Mr Willetts elected by one vote.

Before commencement of the ordinary business on Saturday afternoon, Mr T. L. Hart, chairrnan of the South Canterbury Power Board, waited upon the committee of the "Waimate A. and P. Association and explained points affecting ratepayers in connexion with the Power Board loan. Mr John Anstev, of Timaru, also spoke. Messrs Hart and Anstey satisfactorily answered a number of 'questions, and were heartily thanked for their instructive addresses.
