BOROUGH COUNCILS.
KAIAPOI. The fortnightly meeting of the Kaiapoi Borough Council was hold last night. Present: The Mayor (Mr H. Mcintosh), and Cra. W. B. Scott, H. C. Revell, M. Bameey, A. Gordon, B. F. Joyce, F. Thorno,' G. H. For- < rest, J. Hirst, and J. Bryden, A petition was received from the residents of and visitors to Kairaki asking- tho Council to urge upon the Harbour Board tho necessity of taking over and maintaining the launch landing-stage at Kairaki. It was decided to send tho petition to the Waimoka- I riri Harbour Board with a request that the j landing- bo repaired.
_ Tho Hon. D. Buddo, M.P., wrote concerning the extension of tho telephone system in Kaiapoi, advising' that the Telegraph Department expected to have a, gang at work within a fortnight. "With reference to extending the exchange hoursi he suggested that the Council should apply to the Postmaster at Kaiapoi, when the Department would be prepared to consider the application on its merits. .
Meesrs Pepprffl, Salter, and GrwM»zf» application for tho completion of the leape of sections 4 and 6 at the Pines, to Mr B. J. Dunn, was agreed to.' A number of applications for leasing allotments at the Pines and Kairaki were glinted.
_ Tho Baths Committee Was empowered to install life-saving apparatus in the baths. The committee wao also asked to consider the question of giving free access to tho traths during very hot weather. It wse decided to ask tho proprietor of the picture theatre to co-operate with the police in order that more satisfactory arrangements in admitting tho public ehould be made on nights when special pictures were shown. The Mayor reported that fhe proposal to acquire tho late Mr J. Hurso'a property aa an addition to the Kaiapoi Park had been negatived at & public meeting. The chairman of tho Housing Committee reported that twelve tenders had been received for tho erection of dwellings under th,e Council's housing scheme. Tho proceedings were now held up awaiting the Gov. eminent loan. It was decided to ask the member for the district to endeavour to expedite matters in connexion with the loan. While discussing the rating of the borough, Cr. .loyce heatedly accused the Mayor of working hand and glove with tho larger ratepayers, and on being called to order left- the meeting, exclaiming that thero would be a by-election.
