N.S. WALES TEAM.
PROSPECTS OF N.Z. TOUR.
Tho Now South Wales cricket team ■will arrive in "Wellington to-day, and will play the first match of their tour of New Zealand against "Wellington on Friday, Saturday, and Monday. The members of the team are:—C. G. Macartney (captain), W. Bardsloy, R. Bardatoy, T. S. Andrews, A. N. Kippa£» Arthur Mailer, W. A. Oldfield, H. L. Hendry, G. Everett, D. Mullarkey, A. Punch, A. Bateliffe, and C. B. Cochrane (manager). Interviewed last night regarding the visit of tho Australians and the prospect of New Zealand teams standing up against thorn, Mr J. S. Barrett, chairman of the Now Zealand Cricket Council, stated to a "Press" rcpresc'ntatice that on paper the visitors looked very formidable. It had to bo romembered, however, that Now Zealand had shown exceptional form in the Plunket Shield contests, which showed that they were at least good enough to learn from the New South Wales team, and thoy might make tho New South Wales men look to their laurels. Mr Barrett said he thought that Wellington and Otago both had an excellent chance of extending the visitors, and that the test matches wero by no means foregone conclusions. Tho standard of cricket in Now Zealand of lato had been high, Mr Barrett went on to say, and it must be remembered that during the present season the Becond biggest < score (1905 runs) which had been recorded anywhere in first-class cricket throughout thp world had been registered in the Plunket Shield match between Wellington and Otago. This alone showed that . the batting was pretty-good. Speaking of the Dominion reception •which will be held/in Wellington, Mr Barrett said that Messrs Heathcote Williams, president of tho Now Zealand Cricket Council; Mr J. P. Peake, hon. secretary; and Mr D. Beeso, deputy-chairman, would probably be present. Mr Barrett stated that he would be prevented from attending tho reception on account of business engagements. The Mayor of Wellington would be present, and either Mr Massey or Sir Prancis Bell would represent the Government. Tho opportunity would be taken at this function to present tho Plunket'Shield to the Wellington Association.
