COUNTY COUNCILS.
ELLESMERE. Tho monthly meeting- o£ the Ellesmero County Council, held a*, Leestou on Monday, was attended by Cm. J. Cunningham (chairman). John Heelop, A. Quigley, J- C. Free, John Xixon, and J. P. McEvedy. Several property transfers were notified. Mr "W. 80-ves waited on the Council and asked if it was intended to have- part of Boggy creek cleaned from his place to Kushbrook's road. The engineer reported that tho part referred to was cleaned, as stated in his report, a few months ago, and was then in good order. Mr Bowes complained that tho creek had not been cleaned to its original width, and depth. After a. good deal of discussion, the Councillors decided to inspect that portion ot Boggv creek complained of. It was decided to take legal proceedings for tho recovery of Electric Power Board rates. ' . The Health Department's inspector requested the Council to proceed against a resident of Brooltsido for failure- to send notification of a caso of suspected infectious disease. The report of tho doctor was to tho effect that the child concerned, was "most probably" affected, and the Council did not thm.t there were strong enough grounds for prosecution, and accordingly declined to taie action. Two cases of scarlet fever and one- caso of dinhthorin, were notified by a local doctor. Tho Canterbury Automobile Association wrote in appreciation of the Councils action in widening the road at tho Selwyn ford, Main South Toad . Payments of £250 from the Government for work done at Taumutu lagoon, and for asphalting Elle3mere bridge, were notified. \ _ , A letter from tho' clerk of the Selwyn County Council stated that a loss of water complained of by tho Ellssuiere Council occurred on Mr Grigg's land in Ellesmero County. ~ . , The Public "Works Department applied for a statement of tho annual cost of upkeep of the road from Ellesmere bridge to Southbridge. . , ~ This information was required presumable in view of the road being placed on the list of main highways to be taken over by tho Highways Board in March. The engineer (Mr Alex. Webster) reported that Gilbert's pit was being stripped for the purposed, metalling from Harris's- corner to Leeston boundary. Tho Public Works 'Department's engineer had recommended that £SO be paid as a Errant for the cost of the embankment erected by Mr L. B. Coo and others. Tho Taumutu outlet and culvert had again been blocked causing the land in the vicinity to be flooded. The cause ot tho blockage was the broken bottom of the culvert and the want of a wave-breaker. He recommended that the work of repair be put in hand at once, as it was of a dangerous nature. A? drainage complaint was received from Mr M A. Galpin, of Maryfield, Doyleston, and the Council decided to have an inspection made. ~ . • Foreman Andrews reported having inspected: Taumutu culvert, finding the bottom completely gone. ■ - \ , It was decided to haro Ellesmere bridge tarred immediately. '. " ' A suggestion by Cr. ■ Free that the Council's oil driven road roller should be sold, was held over for consideration later. It was decided to serve notices on property owners along the creek.,from Messrs Howaon Bros.' farm downwards to have the creek cleaned.
