(BT CABLK— P2ESS ASSOCIATION" COrTIUGII?.) ASD CASL.E ASSOCIATION*,*
(Received January 31st, 11.5 p.m.) SYDNEY, January 31.
Tho police and Customs officers are making an effort to capturo cocaino .•smugglers, who are landing largo quantities of the drug in the Commonwealth,
The trade has considerably increased sinco the tightening of American laws, dealers having chosen the, Australian market as one of tho new avenues for the illicit trade, which now -apparently has grown beyond all bounds.
There is hardly any doubt that a combination of dealers with hundreds of thousands of pounds at its back has beeu doing an immense business in this drug, sending it from tho Continent to ports in rvarious parte of tho world. It has been suggested that the trado is directed at bringing about as much as possible in countries outside Germany a condition detrimental to tho physical state of the people.
Customs officials stated that Sydney, which is receiving most of the drug entering Australia, is full of cocaine, and sellers are unablo to obtain a market for it at old prices.
Enquiries resulted in the police obtaining information that tho smuggling is carried on by women and men sent from overseas.
