HEAVY TRAFFIC.
JOINT BY-LAW. A conference of representatives of the City Council, Riccarton Borough Council, Sumner Borough Council, New Brighton Borough Council, Halswell County Council, Waimairi County Council, Heathcote County Council and Paparua County Council met in the latter part of last year, and after several sittings, agreed upon a uniform set of by-laws for the regular tion of heavy traffic in the areas of the local authorities named and the fixing of a scale of fees payable by the owners of the trucks and lorries. These joint by-laws are now in process of adoption by' the local bodies concerned, tor the City Solicitor has advised that in order to bring the bylaw into force on April Ist, it will be necessary for each of the local bodies to take the first step simultaneously. The annual license fees were fixed in the by-laws as follows: — £ 6.
(1) For each traction engine with smooth tyres— "Weighing not more than 10 tons .. "Weighing over 10 and not more than 15 tons Weighing oyer 15 tons For traction engines fitted with cross bars, ridges, studs, or other noh-siipping devices, £5 additional to the above fees. (2) For ptheT heavy traffio vehicles dn one pair of wheels and weighing (when loaded)— Over 1£ and not over 2 tons Over 2 and n-ot over tons Over and not over 3 tons Over 3 tons a fee of £3 plus £1 for each ton and part of a ton over 3 tons. (3) For other heavy traffic vehicles on two pairs of wheels and weighing (when loaded)— Over 3 and not- more than 3£ tons' Over 3s and not more than 4 tons Over 4 and not more than 5 tons Over 5 and not more than 6 tons Over 6 and not mare tha-n 7 tons Over 7 and not more than 9 tons Over 8 and .not more than 9 toii3 Over 9 ancT not more than 10 tons Over 10 tons a fee of £10 phis £2 for each ton and part of a ton over 10 tons. . (4) For other heavy traffic 4 ' vehicles such license fees as may *>e_ decided upon from time to time in pursuance of Section 35 of this Bylaw.
